dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea-coast, in the borders 14 of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was 15 spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, 16 Galilee of the Gentiles: The people which sat in darkness saw

nobleman's son who lay sick at Capernaum). This is again the second miracle that Jesus did when he was come out of Judea into Galilee. John iv. 43. 54. See chap. xiv. 3. 13 Leaving Nazareth, &c.] He (Jesus) passing through the midst of "them" (" of Nazareth," who were about to kill him), went his way, and came down to Capernaum. Lu. iv. 30, 31.

Capernaum.] And thou Capernaum which art exalted unto heaven, shall be brought down to hell for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. Mat. xi. 23. And when they (Jesus and his disciples) were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? Mat. xvii. 24. And they (Jesus and his disciples) went into Capernaum, and straightway on the Sabbath day he entered into the Synagogue, and taught. Mar. i. 21. Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine; and there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum (whom Christ healed). John iv. 46. &c. And (the disciples) entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum, and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them (but they afterwards saw him walking on the sea towards them, &c). When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there (on the other side of the sea of Tiberias), neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum (where Jesus reproved their carnal views, and declared himself the bread of life). These things said he in the synagogue as he taught in Capernaum. John vi. 17. 24. 52.

Zabulon.] The third lot came up (in the division of the promised land) for the children of Zebulun, according to their families, and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid, &c. Jos. xix. 10. &c.

Nephthalim.] The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, according to their families. And their coast was from Heleph, from Allon to Zaanannim, and Adami, Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum, &c. Jos. xix. 32, 33.

14 It might be fulfilled, &c.] See chap. i. 22; ii. 15. 23. with com. For I say unto you (said Jesus to his disciples), That this that is written must yet be accomplished in

me.

And he was reckoned among the transgressors. Lu. xxii. 37.

Saying.] Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when, at

the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Is. ix. 1, 2.

15 Galilee of the Gentiles.] And (of the cities of refuge) they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba (which is Hebron) in the mountain of Judah. Jos. XX

7. And out of the tribe of Naphtali (they gave), Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs to be a city of refuge for the slayer. Jos. xxi. 32. King Solomon gave Hiram (king of Tyre, who furnished him with Cedar trees, and fir trees, and with gold) twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 1 Ki. ix. 11. In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and took Ijon, &c. and Galilee, and all the land of Naphtali, and carried them captive to Assyria. 2 Ki. xv. 29.

16 Which sat in darkness.] Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron, because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the Most High; therefore he brought down their heart with labour, they fell down and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of the darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. Ps. cvii. 10-14. I the Lord have called thee (Christ) in righteousness, and will hold thine hand and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles, to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. Is. xlii. 6, 7. Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Is. lx. 1, 2, 3. Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy, when I fall I shall arise; when I sit in darkness the Lord shall be a light unto me. Mi. vii. 8. Thou (child Jesus) shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sin, through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day spring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet in the way of peace. Lu. i.

great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, 17 and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And 18 Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon

76-79. A light (Christ was) to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel (said Simeon). Lu. ii. 32.

And shadow of death.] Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it (said Job, of the day of his birth), let a cloud dwell upon it. Job iii. 5. Let me alone (said Job to his Maker), that I may take comfort a little, before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness, and the shadow of death: a land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness. Job x. 20, 21, 22. There is no darkness, nor shadow of death where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. Job xxxiv. 22. Our heart (said David) is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way, though thou hast sore broken us, in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. Ps. xliv. 18, 19. Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. Je. xiii. 16. Seek him that maketh the seven stars, and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night. Am. v. 8. 17 That time.] Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Mar.

i. 14.

Repent, &c.] See chap. iii. 2. and com. I am not come (said Jesus to the Pharisees) to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mat. ix. 13. As ye go (said Christ to his disciples) preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. x. 7. Repent ye, and believe the gospel. Mar. i. 15. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Lu. v. 32. And he (Jesus) sent "them" ("his disciples") to preach the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 2. Even the very dust of your city which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you; notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, in sackcloth and ashes; but it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. Lu. x. 11-14.

Kingdom of heaven is at hand.] From the days of John the Baptist until now, the king

dom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Mat. xi. 12. It is given unto you (said Jesus to his disciples) to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given; when any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. The kingdom of heaven (said Jesus) is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field. Mat. xiii. 11. 19. 24. Again, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind. Mat. xiii. 47. Then (at the coming of the Lord) shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Mat. xxv. 1.

18 Walking by the sea of Galilee.] Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men, and straightway they forsook their nets and followed him. Mar. i. 16, 17, 18. And (Jesus) saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. Lu. v. 2.

Sea of Galilee.] Jesus departed from "thence" (" Tyre, and Sidon"), and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee, and went up into a mountain, and sat down there (where multitudes came to be healed). Mat. xv. 29. And the coast (of the land of Canaan) shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward. Nu. xxxiv. 11. And unto the Reubenites, and unto the Gadites, I gave from Gilead, even unto the river Arnon, &c. The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof from Chinnereth, even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, &c. De. iii. 16, 17. And it came to pass as the people pressed upon him, to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret. Lu. v. 1. After these things (after justifying himself for curing the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda) Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. John vi. 1. After these things (having satisfied the doubts of Thomas) Jesus shewed himself (after his resurrection) again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. John xxi. 1.

Two brethren.] Now the names of the twelve apostles are these, the first Simon,

called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: 19 for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I 20 will make you fishers of men, And they straightway left their nets,

who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, &c. &c. Mat. x. 2. And he (Jesus) called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles, Simon (whom he also named Peter), and Andrew his brother, James, and John, Philip, and Bartholomew, Matthew, and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon, called Zelotes, and Judas, the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor. Lu. vi. 14, 15, 16. One of the two which heard John speak (of Christ's superior dignity) and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus, and when Jesus beheld him he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is, by interpretation, a stone. John i. 40, 41, 42. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him: There is a lad here (he who had the five barley loaves and two small fishes, with which Jesus fed five thousand men). John vi. 8. &c.

For they were fishers.] Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian. Come now, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh (said God to Moses), that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. Er. iii. 1. 10. There came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite. And his son Gideon thrashed wheat by the wine-press. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. Ju. vi. 11, 12. So "he" ("Elijah") departed thence (from the cave where the word of the Lord came to him), and found Elisha, the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 1 Ki. xix. 19. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father, and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again, for what have I done unto thee. And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat: then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him. 1 Ki. xix. 20, 21. He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds, from following the ewes great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. So he fed them according to the integrity of

his heart, and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands. Ps. Ixxviii. 70, 71, 72. Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah (the priest of Bethel), I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son, but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of Sycamore fruit. And the Lord took me, as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. Am. vii. 14, 15. God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are. That no flesh should glory in his presence. 1 Co. i. 27. 28, 29.

19 Follow me.] Jesus said unto him (his disciple who asked leave to go and bury his father), Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.

Mat.

And

Mat. viii. 22. And as Jesus passed forth from thence (where he cured the man sick of the palsy), he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. Mat. ix. 9. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. xvi. 24. Jesus said unto him (the young man who asked, What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life), If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me. Mat. xix. 21. as he (Jesus) passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. Mar. ii. 14. And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said unto him, Follow me. Lя. v. 27. And he (Jesus) said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Lu. ix. 59. The day following (that on which Jesus called Simon) Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. John i. 43. If any man serve me let him follow John xii. 26. Jesus saith unto him (Peter), If I will that he (John) tarry till I come, what is that to thee: follow thou me. John xxi. 22.

me.

I will make you fishers of men.] And it shall come to pass (said the Lord to Ezekiel, in the vision of the holy waters), that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live, and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither, for they shall be healed, and every thing shall

They shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. Ez. xlvii. 9, 10. And Jesus said unto "them" ("Simon and Andrew"), Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. Mar. i. 17, 18. And so was also James, and John (as well as Peter astonished), the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon (at the draught of fishes). And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men; and when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all and followed him. Lu. v. 10, 11. Unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews: to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them that are without law, as without law (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ), that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak; I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 1 Co. ix. 20, 21, 22. Though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved; but be it so, I did not burden you; nevertheless being crafty, I caught you with guile. 2 Co. xii. 15, 16.

When it pleased God to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood, &c. Ga. i. 16.

21 Other two brethren.] See com. on Two Brethren, at verse 18. And after six days, Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart. Mat. xvii. 1. Then came to "him" ("Jesus") the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him; and he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand and the other on thy left in thy kingdom. Mat. xx. 20, 21. And he (Jesus) took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Mat. xxvi. 37. And when he had gone a little farther thence (after calling Simon and Andrew) he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship, with the hired servants, and went after him. Mar. i. 19, 20. 20 They straightway.] He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me, and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. Mat. x. 37. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters; yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Ac. x. 37, 38.

Teaching in their synagogues.] And when he (Jesus) was departed thence (where he excuses his disciples for plucking the ears of corn on the sabbath day), he went into their synagogue. Mat. xii. 9. And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Mat. xiii. 54.
