indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the 42 second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And 43 he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

severance and supplication, for all saints. Ep. vi. 18.

Enter not into temptation.] See chap. vi. 13. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the path of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. Pr. iv. 14, 15. They (that receive the seed) on the rock, are they which when they hear receive the word with joy: and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Lu. viii. 13. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Lu. xi. 4. There hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Co. x. 13. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. 2 Pe. ii. 9. Because "thou ("the angel of the church in Philadelphia") hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Re. iii. 10. The spirit indeed is willing, &c.] Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. Oh that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes. Thy testimonies also are my delight, and my counsellors. My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word. I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments, for therein do I delight. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. Depart from me, ye evil doers; for I will keep the commandments of my God. Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live; and let me not be ashamed of my hope. Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually. Let thine hand help for I have chosen thy precepts. I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight. Ps. cxix. 4, 5. 24, 25. 32. 35-37. 115-117. 173, 174. Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee: the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. Is. xxvi. 8, 9. For I know

me;

:

that in me dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me; for I delight in the law of God, after the inward man: but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. Ro. vii. 18-25. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. Ro. viii. 3. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Co. ix. 27. This I say then, Walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts. Ga. v. 16, 17. 24. Not as though I had already attained (said St. Paul), either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Phi. iii. 12, 13, 14.

42 The second time.] See verses 36. 39. O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee. Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry. Ps. lxxxviii. 1, 2. And again “he” (“Jesus") went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. And when he returned, he found them asleep again (for their eyes were heavy); neither wist they what to answer him. Mar. xiv. 39, 40. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He. iv. 15.

43 For their eyes were heavy.] Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third 45 time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples,

and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the 46 hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand 47 that doth betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and

the sea; or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. Pr. xxiii. 34. So the ship-master came to "him" ("Jonah"), and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. Jon. i. 6. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were awake they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. Lu. ix. 32. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep; and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. Ac. xx. 9. For there is no power but of God. Ro. xiii. 1. There fore let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that be drunken, are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breast-plate of faith and love, and for an helmet the hope of salvation. 1 The. v. 6, 7, 8.

44 Prayed the third time.] When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Mat. vi. 7. Now therefore, O our God (said Daniel), hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate for the Lord's sake. O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies. O Lord, hear: O Lord, forgive: O Lord, hearken and do: defer not, for thine own sake, O my God; for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. Ďa. ix. 17, 18, 19. And "he" ("Jesus") spake a parable unto them, to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. Lu. xviii. 1. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 2 Co. xii. 8.

45 Sleep on now.] And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked "them ("the prophets of Baal") and said, Cry aloud; for he is a God; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. 1 Ki. xviii. 27. Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth, and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes:

but know thou that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Ec. xi. 9.

The hour is at hand.] See verses 2. 14, 15, And he (Jesus) cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. Mar. xiv. 41, 42. When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me; but this is your hour (said Jesus to the chief priests, &c.), and the power of darkness. Lu. xxii. 53. Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come, that he should depart out of this world unto the Fa ther, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. John xiii. 1. "These words ("I have overcome the world") spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come: glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. John xvii. 1.

46 Let us be going.] And it came to pass. when the Philistine (Goliath) arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 1 Sa. xvii. 48. And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem. Lu. ix. 51. But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I straitened till it be accomplished. Lu. XIL 50 With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. Lu. xxii. 15. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. John xiv. 31. What, mean ye to weep and to break mine heart (said Paul)? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. Ac. xxi. 13.

47 Lo, Judas, &c.] See verse 55. And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves from the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders. Mar. xiv. 43. And while he yet spake behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? L. xxii. 47. 48. When Jesus had spoken "these words"

staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he 48 that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to 49 Jesus, and said, Hail, Master; and kissed him. And Jesus said 50 unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And, behold, one of 51

("that the love wherewith thou hast loved me (0 righteous Father) may be in them, and I in them"), he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also which betrayed him knew the place, for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also which betrayed him stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore ye seek me, let these go their way. John xviii. 1—8. Men and brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Ac. i. 16.

48 Whomsoever I shall kiss, &c.] And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. 2 Sa. iii. 27. And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother; and Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. But Amasa took no heed to the sword which was in Joab's hand, so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again, and he died. 2 Sa. xx. 9, 10. Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. Ps. xxviii. 3. He hath put forth his hand against such as be at peace with him, he hath broken his covenant: the words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. Ps. lv. 21, 22.

Hold him fast.] And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he, take him, and lead him away safely. Mar. xiv. 44.

49 Hail, Master!] And when they had

And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. Mat. xxvii. 29, 30. And they (the soldiers) clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it upon his head, and began to salute him, Hail, king of the Jews! Mar. xv. 17, 18. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, and said, Hail, king of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. John xix. 2, 3.

And kissed him.] And his father Isaac said unto him (Jacob), Come near now, and kiss me, my son. Ge. xxvii. 26. Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his (Saul's) head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 1 Sa. x. 1. And

50 Friend, wherefore art thou come?] But "he" (the "householder who hired labourers at different times") answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong; didst not thou agree with me for a penny? them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off 52 his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into

his place for all they that take the sword shall perish with the 53 sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

51 One of them which were with Jesus, &c.] See verse 35. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. Mar. xiv. 47. But he turned and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. Lu. ix.

55.

Then said he (Jesus) unto them, But now (after Christ was betrayed), he that hath a purse (said Jesus), let him take it, and likewise his scrip; and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me. And he was reckoned among the transgressors; for the things concerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords; and he said unto them, It is enough. Lord, shall we smite with the sword (said they which were about Jesus)? And one of them smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far, and he touched his ear and healed him. Lu. xxii. 36, 37, 38. 49, 50, 51. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. the servant's name was Malchus. For even hereunto were ye called, be

cause Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. They that take the sword, &c.] Behold, I send you prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and some of them ye shall kill, and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must 54 be? In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come 55 out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on

opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Ki. vi. 17. A fiery steam issued and came forth before "him" ("the Ancient of days" in Daniel's vision of God's kingdom); thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Da. vii. 10. And to you who are troubled (will God recompense) rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, with his mighty angels. 2 Th. i. 7. Twelve.] And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness, and all manner of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these, the first, Simon, who is called Peter; and Andrew his brother; James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, the publican; James, the son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, whose surname was Thaddeus; Simon, the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 54 How then, &c.] See verse 34. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Ps. xxii. 1. Save me, O God: for the waters are come in unto my soul, &c. Ps. lxix. 1. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? Is. liii. 1. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision, and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. Know, therefore, and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem, unto the Messiah, the Prince, shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks. The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off; but not for himself; and the people of the prince that

shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. And the end thereof shall be with a flood; and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Da. ix. 24, 25, 26. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Zec. xiii. 7. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he (Jesus) expounded unto "them" ("his disciples") in all the Scriptures, the things concerning himself. And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures: and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. Lu. xxiv. 25, 26. 44, 45, 46. And if he called them gods unto whom the word of God came, and the Scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, thou blasphemest, because I said I am the Son of God. John x. 35, 36. Men and brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before, concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Ac. i. 16. See verse 56.

Be ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple ye stretched forth no hands against me; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. I sat daily with you teaching, &c.] And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the Scribes that Christ is the son of David? Mar. xii. 35. And in the day-time he was teaching in the temple, and at night he went out and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.
