PREFACE.

THE present publication has been undertaken for the purpose of furnishing computers with a more convenient table of six-figure logarithms than has hitherto been published in a separate form.

The logarithmic tables in general use, as those of Sherwin, Hutton, and Callet, which contain the logarithms of the natural numbers up to 100,000 (or beyond), and of the trigonometrical lines for every 10 seconds, to seven decimal places, being unnecessarily extensive for most ordinary purposes, and inconvenient on account of their bulk, various abridged tables have been published from time to time in different forms, containing a greater or less number of logarithms, and to five or six places, according to the purposes for which they were chiefly destined by their editors. Of such smaller or abridged tables, the best known is that of Lalande, in 18mo., of which an edition, improved in typography and appearance, and rendered more convenient for general use by omitting the characteristics of the logarithms of the natural numbers, was published in London, in 1839, under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. It contains the logarithms of the natural numbers up to
