St. Paul en eft le témoin, il eft en Grace, & cependant fa concupifcence fe reveille; il eft combatu de l'aiguillon de la chair. Sa chair combat contre fon Efprit; il ne fait pas le bien qu'il voudroit, & il eft contraint de S'écrier, O miferable que je fuis!

CHAP. X.

La Grace Sanctifiante eft incompatible avec le peché Mortel.

Our bien prouver cette affertion, il faut fçavoir la Definition du peché mortel, & de la Grace, ou quels font les effets de l'un & de l'autre. Le ainfy, parce qu'il donne la mort à nôtre Ame, ou la prive de la Grace de Dieu, qui eft fa;

Santifying Grace is incompatible with

Mortal Sin.

O prove this affertion we muft know the right Definition of Mor-} tal fin, and of fanctifying Grace, or what are the effects of both. Mortal fin is fo call'd, because it procures death to the foul,or deprives it of the Grace of God, which is its fupernatural Life, and fanctifying Grace is fo term'd, for as much as it fanctifieth the foul, and ren ders it acceptable to God. By mortal fin the foul is in Enmity and hatred with God, but through fanctifying Grace

CHAP. XI.

La Grace Sanctifiante fe peut perdre..

n' ya rien en cette vie caduque & miferable d'asfuré que la mort. Les plus brillantes couronnes font incerraines,

Now the Definition and the effects of mortal fin and fanctifying Grace being oppofites, they cannot poffibly be found at one and the fame time in one and the fame subject, as day and night chase away each other, and cannot exift both together at the fame time in the fame place and fubject; fo mortal fin and Grace cannot cohabit at one and the fame time in one and the fame foul, and therefore the one is inconfiftent with th' other.

CHAP. XI.

Sanctifying Grace may be luft.

Here is nothing certain in this fading and miferable Life but Death, the moft fplendent Crowns are tottering, and the best established Monarchies are oftentimes fubverted. And as the health of the Body, which we count a great Trea
