PREFATORY ADDRESS.

THE late Rev. JOHN BROAD, of Hitchin, was an attendant on my ministry at Craven Chapel soon after my settlement in the Metropolis, but after the lapse of a few years I lost sight of him, except hearing from time to time of his assiduous cultivation of his talents, his zealous advocacy of the truths of the Gospel, and the signal blessing of God upon his labours, which gave me great pleasure and satisfaction.

Of the high estimation in which he was held at Hitchin I was an eye-witness, when some years since, on a visit to that place, I renewed my acquaintance with him, and received his warm recognition of our former meetings. There was

a serene and constant smile upon his countenance,

indicative of the peace that reigned within, and
