REDUCTION OF THE OLD NEW ENGLAND CURRENCY TO FEDERAL MONEY.

RULE.

To the pounds annex three ciphers, and divide the number by 3, and the quotient will be the answer in cents; but if there be pounds and shillings, annex to the pounds half the number of shillings and two ciphers; and if the shillings be an odd number, instead of two ciphers, annex a 5 and a cipher, and divide the number by 3, and the quotient will be the answer in cents, as before; if there be pounds, shillings, pence and farthings, let the pounds and shillings be arrang.. ed as before, then reduce the pence and farthings into farthings, and add 1 if their number exceed 12, and 2 if it exceed 36, and let them be so annexed to the pounds, that the units of the farthings shall possess the third place from the pounds; then divide by 3, as before, and the quotient is cents.

NOTE. As a dollar is six-twentieths of a pound, or, which is the same thing, three-tenths, therefore a pound is ten-thirds of a dollar. It is also evident, that if pounds be multiplied by 10, their product will be thirds of a dollar; and if thirds of a dollar be divided by 3, the quotient will be dollars. Again, as shillings are twentieths of a pound, it is evident that if they be halved, they become tenths or decimals of a pound; and if 1 be added to 24 farthings, or 2 be added to 48 farthings, and they be made to occupy the third place from pounds, they become decimals also; for twenty-four farthings are twenty-four nine hundred sixtieths of a pound; but if 1 be added to the numerator of this fraction, then must 40 be added to the denominator, to make a fraction of equal value, for twenty-four nine hundred sixtieths is equal to twenty-five one thousandths; now, if a pound be considered the unit, twenty-five thousandths will be expressed thus, ,025£. Therefore, as the number of farthings may be less or greater than 24, so a greater or less number than a unit must be added to their number. Q. E. D.
