So end the Introductory and Doctrinal Departments

Before explaining the Third, or Scripture Narrative Department, we may ask here:

Q. 23.-How may the System best be introduced to an entire School of all ages ?

A. This will require both discretion and decision, because the Texts, Helps, and Lessons of Grade I., so specially needed by all ages, and which should have been taught in infancy, cannot be omitted now without serious, if not fatal, loss to the proper influence and power of the System. See Note under Q., 18. Q. 24.-How is Grade I. of the Catechism System ordinarily taught. A.-In large Gallery Classes, by the Roll in large type, but older Scholars must also be enabled to say and sing every Lesson.

Q. 25.-But how can that Grade be taught to Bible, Senior, and Adult Classes ?

A.-Never attempt to graduate any School the first six months, till all know something of Grades I. and II., but teach tunes at opening and closing from the desk, and Lessons in the classes, from the top of the Catechism Lesson page, and let all Teachers and Bible Classes have Bible Voices, Parts I. and II., in their pockets all the time, then graduate after six months according to attainments.

Q. 26.-How should the School be arranged for this preparatory, preliminary, and early teaching.

A.-No alteration of the classes is necessary. The first verse and the Tune new every Sunday, should be taught from the desk without an instrument (see

Directions, page 4, and Questions, page 121, 122). All the answers, including the Second Catechism, should be audibly announced and deliberately said by the Superintendent, the whole School repeating or reading the same after him, thus each will learn according to will and ability, and each Teacher in the class will enable every Scholar to say them, always repeating past Lessons.

Q. 27.-What can Teachers do to facilitate the work of this introduction? A.-Acquaint themselves thoroughly with the Lessons by learning by heart from the top of the Catechism Lesson page, if possible a Lesson ahead of the School, but always the day's Lesson so as to teach it in the class without reading, and often repeating past Lessons.

Q. 28.--How can Scholars promote their knowledge of this introductory and Catechism teaching?

A.-By often repeating what they learn in the class, by fathers and mothers hearing them say the Hymns and Answers and helping them to sing the Tunes that they have been taught, and also by a Roll hung up in the Schoolroom, and singing Hymns and Tunes learned before Afternoon School; this will redeem the time and save the riot often witnessed before opening.

Q. 29. What further may Teachers do to facilitate and promote this teaching?

A.-Thoroughly study and master the Directions for teaching the Catechism System, page 4, also Design of the System, page 5, and the Grades I. and II. of the Key, pages 6 and 7.

Q. 30.-What of the Catechism System more can the Superintendent do to secure this teaching?

A.-Be very correct in closing Examinations, knowing and proving that all the classes answer, and if not, why not? A Teacher may have neglected to teach the Lesson, if so let the whole School know it; better lose such a Teacher than the class and the Homes lose this teaching.

Q. 31.-What more remains for any or all to do to secure this teaching? A.-Always be teaching for a Quarterly Examination by the Minister before Teachers, Parents, and Friends of the School; this will bring out Parents who have helped at Home to come and see the children answer, and here is secured contact for and with the Minister to say a kind word.

Q. 32.-What immediate advantage may be looked for from all this? A.-Real Teaching of essential Bible truth, Model Schools, conscious progress of knowledge in children, and Parents' Homes reached and helped, Scholars taught to teach, and to crown the whole, all made happy by what God the Holy One can bless.
