Love, which is "Charity, suffereth long and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not vainly provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things;"

"Love worketh no ill to his neighbour, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

Rom. xii. 10.-Eph. iv. 15.-St. John xv. 12. xiii. 34.-1 John iii. 16-18. iv. 7. 8. 11. 12. 21.-Heb. xiii. 1.-1 Tim. vi. 11.-2 Cor. vi. 6.—1 Pet. i. 22. iii. 8.-Gal. v. 6.—1 Cor.xiii. 1-7.-Rom. xiii. 10. 175. Q. In what way does this brotherly love show itself among the Saints on earth?

A. They "support and help one another."

66

Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth; for we that are strong, ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves;" but "bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil ye the law of CHRIST."

For "whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"

1 Cor. x. 24.-Rom. xv. 1. 2. 3.-Gal. vi. 2.-1 John iii. 17. 18.

And they "pray for one another."

"Brethren pray for us;" continue in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgivings;" "praying

always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints."

1 Thess. v. 17. 25.-Col. iv. 3.-Eph. vi. 18. 19.

-St. Luke xviii. 1. xxi. 36.-Rom, xii. 12.-1 Pet. iv. 7.-James v. 16-18.

176. Q. Have also the Saints communion with the Angels in Heaven ?

A. Yes; they have communion with the ANGELS in heaven, "who are ministering Spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation;" for CHRIST says that there is joy in the presence of the ANGELS of GOD over one sinner that repenteth." -Heb. i. 14.-St. Luke xv. 10.

177. Q. And have the Saints fellowship with any other, besides ?

A. Yes; the Saints on earth, have communion also with the Saints who, having "fought the good fight of faith," have left this world, and have joined their brethren made perfect in Heaven; as St. Paul says: "Ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living GOD, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of Angels; to the general assembly and Church of the first-born, which are written in heaven; and to GOD the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to JESUS the Mediator of the new covenant."-Heb. xii. 22. 23. 178. Q. What ought to be the course of life of those who are in such goodly company?

A. Wherefore, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of WITNESSES, let us lay aside

every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us."

Looking unto JESUS the Author and Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the Cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of GOD."

66

And, we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto theend: that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who, through FAITH AND PATIENCE inherit the promises." -Heb. vi. 11. 12.- Pet. i. 13.-Heb. xii. 1. 2. 179. Q. What behoves us then, as members of CHRIST'S HOLY CATHOLICK CHURCH?

A. "Having an HIGH PRIEST, JESUS, over the HOUSE OF GOD;

66

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of Faith, having our HEARTS sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our BODIES washed with pure

water.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; FOR HE IS FAITHFUL THAT PROMISED.

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works;" "exhorting one another, and so much the more as we see the day approaching."Heb. x. 21-25.

180. Q. Rehearse now, briefly, the sum of what you believe, in this Article of your Faith.

A. I believe that, there is an assembly of men, gathered out of all nations, joined together by ONE FAITH and ONE SPIRIT, in ONE BODY, the CHURCH :

in which we are "called" by the FATHER, "admitted" through Baptism, "saved" by CHRIST, and "sanctified" by the HOLY GHOST.

I believe that, the SPIRIT of CHRIST is given only to that Body: a part of which is upon earth, militant; and a part in heaven, triumphant; and that, therefore, all who are made members of the Church on earth, are put in the only way there is, to come to the Church in heaven; for, out of the Church, there is no salvation.

And, I believe that, the CHURCH was established upon earth by the APOSTLES, whom CHRIST ordained, to whom He gave HIS HOLY SPIRIT, and with whom He has promised to be alway, even unto the end of the world. Therefore do I heartily thank my HEAVENLY FATHER, that, of His great mercy, He has made me a member of His "HOLY CATHOLICK CHURCH," by putting me in " that PURE and AposTOLICK BRANCH of it," to which, by the grace of God, I belong.

Now, unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

UNTO HIM BE GLORY IN THE CHURCH BY CHRIST JESUS THROUGHOUT ALL AGES, WORLD WITHOUT END. Amen."-Eph. iii. 20. 21.

ARTICLE X.

"THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS."

1. Q.

A.

What is the tenth Article of your belief?

The FORGIVENESS OF SINS. I believe in "the forgiveness of sins."

2. Q. Why is this Article put after the one of "the Holy Catholick Church?"

A. Because, as there is one Holy Catholick Church in which alone we can be saved, so also we believe, that our sins are forgiven, in that Church only.

3. Q.

What do you understand by "forgiveness?" A. An offence is "forgiven" when the person who is offended promises to think no more of it, and to be as he was before the offence; and "forgiveness" is, that promise.

4. Q. By whom are sins forgiven?

A. BY GOD; for "who can forgive sins, but GOD alone?"

St. Luke v. 21.-Ps. xxxii. 5. cxxx. 4.-Is. xliii. 25.-Dan. ix. 9.

5. Q. To whom does He forgive them?

A. To all who, through BAPTISM, become members of the HOLY CATHOLICK CHURCH.

6. Q. Do you mean to say that God forgives us our sins by Baptism?
