The office of Christ,

21 Produce your cause, saith the Lor D; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob. , 23 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them ; or declare us things for to come. 23 Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. 24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your werk of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you, 25 I have raised ". from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as usion mortar, and as the potter treadeth clay. 26 Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know 2, and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous 2 yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words. 27 The first shall say to Zion, Behold, behold them: and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings. 28 For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word. o 29 Behold, they are all vanity, their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion. CHAP. XLII. 1 The office of Christ. 5 God's firomise to him. 10 An exhortation to firaise God. B EHOLD my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth ; I have put my spirit upon him : he shall o judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 Abruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he pot quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set o in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. 5 || Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein : 6 I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house. 8 I am the Lord : that is my name:

and my glory will I not give to another,

neither my praise to graven images.

9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. 10 Sing unto the Lo R D a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and oil that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. -11 Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains, 12 Let them give glory unto the Los D, and declare his praise in the islands. 13 The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies. 14 I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once, 15 I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. * ió And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. hese things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. 17 || They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images; that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods. 18. Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 19. Who is blind, but my servant 2 or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lorp’s servant? 20 Seeing many o but thou observest not ; opening the ears, but he heareth not. 21 The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. 22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison-houses; they are for a prey, and none delivereth ; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore. 33 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken, and hear for the time to come 2 24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LoRD, he against whom we have sinned 3 for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. 25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of

The Lord comforteth the church rvith his firomises. 14 He foretelleth Babylon’s destruction; 18 and his ficofile's deliverance. UT now thus saith the LoRD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not : for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned ; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3 For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave o thy ransom, lothiopia and Seba for thee. .

was no good formed, neither shall there be after me. 11 I, even I, am the Lord ; and beside me there is no saviour. 12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lon D, that I am God. 13 Yea, before the day was, Iam he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it? 14 || Thus saith the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.

15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. 16 Thus saith the Lord, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters; 17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise : they are extinct, they are quenched as tow. 18 "I Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth ; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. 20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen. 21 This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise. 22 || But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob ; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel. 23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt-offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I

have not caused thee to serve with an of

fering, nor wearied thee with incense. 24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities. 25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. . . 26 Put me in remembrance : let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. 27 Thy first father hath sinned, and thy

teachers have transgressed against me.

28 Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches. CHAP. XLIV. 1 God's church comforted. 7. The vanity of idols, 9 and folly of idol-makers. ET now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen : 2 Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. 3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground:

I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water-courses.

5 One shall say, I am the Lord's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob ; and another shall subscribe with The vanity of idols, and

his hand unto the Lorp, and surname himself by the name of Israel. 6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Is. rael, and his Redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last ; and beside me there is no God. 7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people 2 and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. 8 Fear ve not, neither be afraid : have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it 2 we are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God ; I know not any. 9 * They that make a graven imare all of them vanity ; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know ; that they may be asham

He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it. 15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread ;

That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers: 28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall orm all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid. the God of Israel. 4 For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, o thou hast not known me. 5 || I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6 That ão may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LoRD, and there is none else. 7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. 8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I, the LoRD have created it. 9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker : Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay, say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou ? or thy work, He hath no hands 2 10 Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou ? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth 2 11 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. 13 I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts. 14 Thus saith the Lorp, The labour of Fgypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and oft over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. 15 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour. 16 They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them : they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols. 17 But Israel shall be saved in the LoRD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. 18 For thus saith the LoRD that created the heavens ; God himself that form

Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside tne. 11 Therefore shallevil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. 12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. 14 Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. * * * , 15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth : they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall

H EAR, ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. 2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel ; The Lord of hosts is his nanne. 3 I have declared the former thin from the beginning ; and they went for

did them suddenly, and they came to pass. 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; 5 I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thce: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. , 6 Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it 2 I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.
