"The saying that the Bible is its own best commentary' receives very apt illustration in this little volume. Under Mr. Brown's skilful and reverent treatment the narrative becomes a vivid illustration of how a child of God typified by Ruth, is first 'called,' and then successively 'stablished, strengthened, and settled' in Christ, each of these stages being dealt with in a separate chapter. At the outset the principle is rightly insisted upon that no one has any right to put any construction or interpretation upon the Word other than that which the Holy Ghost has Himself given us of it in the Divine Word itself.' As good specimens of the spiritual 'beating out of that which is gleaned' we may note the remarks on chap. ii. v. 17, and the discursus on chap. ii. v. 20, touching Christ as the kinsman-Redeemer. But in every portion of the book, Mr. Brown shows that valuable spiritual lessons lie hidden; he throws the strong clear light of innumerable other Scriptures upon the passage under treatment, and sometimes enforces his meaning by instances culled from his own experiences with seekers after God, and souls 'in a spiritual bog.' These passages display a very extensive familiarity with Holy Scripture, and they are begun, continued and ended' in the Bible. Mr Brown is evidently a firm believer in the plenary verbal inspiration which so many now-adays are throwing overboard, and he declines to abandon as exploded, any of the old Evangelical truths, or to be entangled in the 'new theology.'"-The English Churchman.

“The author has produced in many respects a choice and interesting work. His design was to open it out by comparison with other parts of Scripture,' and he has, on the whole, succeeded admirably. While there was so much in the well-known narrative that found a beaten track among preachers and writers, Mr. Brown has entered into many fresh features of the bearings of the history, and, at the same time, has produced a Christ-exalting and sinner-abasing work. Much in this book may more properly go under the term adaptation than interpretation; yet it is so abundantly laden with Scripture quotations and profitable hints from the original, as to make a very valuable contribution to sound, if not intensely strong, doctrinal literature."-Gospel Advocate.

"Here is a fund of knowledge and a store of savoury food for meditative and spiritual minds."-Protestant Echo.

"A clear, choice, and sound little volume, full of spiritual and suggestive teaching. We have seldom read a book which more commends itself to our mind. It is just the book for those who desire to be taught."-Silver Morn.
