6-9.

the Mediator of a New Covenant; that, as his death was accepted as a ransom from the transgressions under the First Covenant, so, they who are now called, may receive the promise of the eternal inherit

ance:

16 for, where a covenant is made, the death of the interposed sacrifice must of necessity be endured:

17 for, a covenant is confirmed only over lifeless bodies; since it hath no force while the interposed sacrifice is living:

18 wherefore, neither was the First Covenant instituted without blood;

19 for, after the whole commandment of the law had been Exod. xxiv. pronounced by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of the calves, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and also the Book, and sprinkled all the people,

Ib. v. 8.

20 saying, "This is the blood "of the Covenant which God "hath ratified to you :"

21 and he sprinkled also, with blood, both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry;

22 and almost all things, according to the law, are purified with blood, and without blood

shedding is no remission.

23 It was necessary, therefore, that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with those sacri

fices; but, the heavenly things themselves, with better sacrifices than those;

24 for, Christ is not entered into the Holiest Place made with hands, which was only a copy of the true one; but, into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on behalf of us:

25 and, not to offer himself often, as the high-priest entereth into the Holiest Place, every year, with blood of others;

26 for, then he must have suffered often, since the foundation of the world: but now, in the end of the world, he hath been manifested, once for all, for the cancelling of sin, by the sacrifice of himself.

27 And, as it is appointed to men once to die, and after that the judgment;

28 so also Christ, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, will appear the second time without sin, to those who look to him, through faith, for salvation.

CHAPTER X.

FOR, the law having only a

shadow of the good things that were to come, and not the very image of the things, they could never, by the sacrifices. which they continually offer,

year after year, make those who come to them perfect: 2 for then, they would not cease to be offered; because, the several worshippers, having been once purified, would no longer have conscience of their sins:

3 but, in those sacrifices, a remembrance of their sins is renewed every year:

4 for, it is impossible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

5 Wherefore, when he cometh into the world, he saith, "Sacrifice and offering thou "wouldest not, but thou hast "prepared a body for me:

6"in burnt offerings and "sacrifices for sin, thou hadst "no pleasure;

7 "then said I, Lo, I come "(in the volume of the book "it is written of me) to do "Thy Will, O God:"

8 when he saith above, "Sa"crifice, and offering, and "burnt offerings, and offerings "for sin thou wouldest not, "neither hadst pleasure there"in;" which sacrifices are offered according to the law;

9 and then saith, "Lo, I "come to do Thy Will;" he taketh away the first, that he may establish the second:

10 by which Will we are sanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all.

11 And, every priest standeth

ministering daily, and offering often the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;

12 but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins, sat down for ever on the right hand of God;

13 waiting, from thenceforth, until his enemies shall be made his footstool:

14 for, by one offering he hath perfected, for ever, them that are sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit beareth witness to us: for, after having said,

16"This is the Covenant "that I will make with them "after those days, saith the "Lord, I will put my laws "into their hearts, and will "write them in their mind;" John, iv. 23.

17 he afterwards saith, “ And "their sins and iniquities I "will remember no more :"

18 now, where remission of these is, there is no more of fering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brethren, confidence by the blood of Jesus in that entrance to the Holiest Place,

20 which He hath opened for us, as a new and living way through the Veil, that is, through his flesh;

from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure

water:

23 let us hold fast the profession of our faith, without wavering; (for he who promised is faithful ;)

24 and let us regard each other, to provoke to love and to good works:

25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the custom of some is; but, exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching:

26 for, if we sin wilfully after having received the knowledge 2 Pet. ii. 21. of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remaineth;

27 but, a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and of 1 Thess. i. 8. fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

28 He who disregarded the law of Moses, died without pity, under two or three witnesses: 29 of how much worse a punishment, think ye, he will be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath accounted unholy the blood of the Covenant with which he hath been sanctified; and hath outraged the Spirit of grace?

30 For, we know who hath said, "Vengeance belongeth to "me, I will recompense, saith "the Lord:" and again, “The "Lord will judge his people:"

31 it is a fearful thing, to fall Luke, xii. ;into the hands of the living God!

32 But, call ye to remembrance your former days, in which, after ye had been enlightened, ye endured a great conflict of sufferings;

33 partly, whilst ye yourselves were publicly exposed to revilings and tribulations; and partly, when ye became companions of them that were so treated:

34 for truly, ye suffered with me in my bonds, and took joyfully the plundering of your goods; knowing, that ye have for yourselves, in heaven, a better and a lasting possession. 35 Cast not from you, therefore, your confidence, which hath a great recompense of reward;

36 for ye have need of patience, that, when ye shall have done the will of God, ye may receive his promise:

CHAPTER XI.

BUT, faith is the groundwork of things hoped for; the conviction of things

not seen:

2 by this, indeed, the ancients obtained their renown.

3 By faith, we apprehend that the worlds were framed by the word of God; so that the things which are seen, were tom. iv. 18. not made of things which appeared.

4 By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained testimony that he was justified; God bearing testimony to his gifts: and by it, though he is dead, he yet speaketh.

5 By faith, Enoch was translated, that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God had translated him for, before his translation, he received the testimony, that he pleased God:

6 but, without faith it is impossible to please him; for, he who cometh to God, must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek him out.

7 By faith Noah, having been warned by God of things not yet seen, being moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; by which faith, he condemned the world,

and became an heir of the justification which is by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed, by going forth to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went forth, not knowing whither he was going:

9 by faith, he sojourned in Acts, vil. 5, 6. the land of the promise, as in a foreign land; dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, joint-heirs of the same promise;

10 for, he looked for the city that hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 By faith also, Sarah herself, though barren, received strength to conceive seed to child-bearing; and brought forth a child when she was past the age, because she judged him to be faithful who Rom. iv. 20. had promised it:

12 wherefore from one, and him already dead for such things, were born so many as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the innumerable sand which is on the sea shore. 13 All these died in faith, not having received the promises; but, having seen and greeted them afar off; confessing, that they were only strangers and sojourners on the earth:

14 for, they who say such things declare plainly, that they seek a paternal country.

15 And, indeed, if they had been mindful of that from which they had come out, they had opportunity to turn back; 16 but now, they long for a better, that is, an heavenly one; wherefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he hath prepared a city for them.

17 By faith, Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac;

and he who had received the promises, offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was Gen. xxi. 12. said, that "In Isaac thy seed

19 By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, respecting the things that were to come. 20 By faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed both the

was dying, spake of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave order concerning his own bones.

22 By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw he was a child of extraordinary beauty; and they feared not the command of the king: 23 by faith, Moses, when he

was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

24 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy for a season the pleasures of sin:

25 esteeming the reproach of c. xii. 14 Christ, greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked from them, to the recompense of the reward:

26 by faith, he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he persevered, as seeing him who is invisible:

27 by faith, he performed the passover, and the sprinkling of blood; that he who destroyed the firstborn, should not touch them.

28 By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; which the Egyptians attempting to do, were swallowed up.

29 By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encompassed seven days. 30 By faith, the harlot Rahab, having received the spies with peace, perished not with the unbelievers.

31 And, what more shall I say? for the time would fail me in telling of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephtha; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets : 32 who, through faith, subdued kingdoms, gained jus
