4 Oh! let the dead now hear Thy voice;
Bid, Lord, Thy banished ones rejoice;
Our beauty this, our glorious dress,
Jesus, the Lord, our Righteousness.

LOVE.

Hymn 253.

JESUS! the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far Thy face to see,
And in Thy presence rest.

C. M.

2 No voice can sing, no heart can frame, Nor can the memory find,

A sweeter sound than Jesus' name,
The Saviour of mankind.

3 Oh, hope of every contrite heart,
Oh, joy of all the meek,

To those who fall, how kind Thou art!
How good to those who seek!

4 But what to those who find? Ah! this Nor tongue nor pen can show;

The love of Jesus, what it is
None but His loved ones know.

5 Jesus! our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus! be Thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

Hymn 254.

MY God, I love Thee, not because
I hope for heaven thereby;

Nor yet because, if I love not,
I must forever die.

2 But, O my Jesus, Thou didst me Upon the cross embrace;

C. M.

For me didst bear the nails and spear, And manifold disgrace,

3 And griefs and torments numberless,
And sweat of agony,

E'en death itself; and all for one
Who was Thine enemy.

4 Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ!
Should I not love Thee well;

Not for the sake of winning heaven,
Or of escaping hell;

5 Not with the hope of gaining aught;
Not seeking a reward;

But, as Thyself hast loved me,
O ever loving Lord!

6 E'en so I love Thee, and will love,
And in Thy praise will sing;
Solely because Thou art my God,
And my eternal King.

HOW

[blocks in formation]

sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear!

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And for the weary, rest.

3 Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place;
My never-failing treasury filled
With boundless stores of grace.

4 By Thee my prayers acceptance gain, Although with sin defiled;

Satan accuses me in vain,

And I am owned a child.

5 Jesus! my Shepherd, Guardian, Friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King,

My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, Accept the praise I bring.

1

6 Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I'll praise Thee as I ought.

7 Till then, I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death.

PRAISE.

Hymn 256.

LORD, Thy glory fills the heaven;
Earth is with its fulness stored;

Unto Thee be glory given,

Holy, holy, holy Lord!

III. 3.

Heaven is still with anthems ringing;
Earth takes up the angel's cry,

"Holy, holy, holy," singing,

"Lord of hosts, the Lord most High!"

2 Ever thus in God's high praises,
Brethren, let our tongues unite,
While our thoughts His greatness raises,
And our love His gifts excite.
With his seraph train before Him,
With His holy church below,
Thus unite we to adore Him,

Bid we thus our anthems flow.

3 Lord, Thy glory fills the heaven;
Earth is with its fulness stored;
Unto Thee be glory given,
Holy, holy, holy Lord!

Thus Thy glorious name confessing,
We adopt the angels' cry,
"Holy, holy, holy"-blessing

Thee, the Lord our God most High!

Hymn 257.

AWAKE, my soul, to joyful lays,

L. M.

And sing Thy great Redeemer's praise, He justly claims a song from thee; His loving-kindness, oh, how free! 2 He saw me ruined in the fall, Yet loved me notwithstanding all; He saved me from my lost estate; His loving-kindness, oh, how great! 3 Though numerous hosts of mighty foes, Though earth and hell my way oppose, He safely leads my soul along; His loving-kindness, oh, how strong! 4 When trouble, like a gloomy cloud, Has gathered thick, and thundered loud, He near my soul has always stood; His loving-kindness, oh, how good! 5 Often I feel my sinful heart Prone from my Saviour to depart, But though I oft have Him forgot, His loving-kindness changes not.
