CONTENTMENT-CONVERSION.

If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto [Levit. xxvi. 40 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

me.

CONTENTMENT.

[Jer. iii. 13

Better is little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure, and trouble therewith. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred there. with. [Prov. xv. 16, 17. Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues without right. [Prov. xvi. 8.

Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. [Prov. xxx. 8, 9.

Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. [1 Tim. vi. 6-12

CONVERSION (OF SINNERS).

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

[James, v. 20.

COVENANT-COVETOUSNESS.

COVENANT (WITH GOD).

17

God said I will establish my covenant with you: neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And this is the token of the covenant which 1 make between me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the clond. And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. [Gen. ix. 11-16.

Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac. [1 Chron. xvi. 15, 16.

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord: I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. (Heb. x. 16-18.

COVETOUSNESS.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. [Exod. xx. 17.

Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

[Isa. v. 8.

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed,

and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. [Luke, xii. 13-15.

DEATH.

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not

[Job, xiv. 1, 2. Man dieth, and wasteth away; yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up; So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

[Job, xiv. 10-12. As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth: For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. [Psalm ciii. 15, 16.

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. [Math. x. 28-31.

Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.... For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. [ Isa. xxxviii. 1, 18.

The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

[1 Sam. ii. 6.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken : for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

[Gen. iii. 19.

The voice said, Cry, And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: the grass withereth, the flower fadeth because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. [Isa. xl. 6, 7, 8.

DEBT-DECEIT

DEFILEMENT.

19

As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. [Job, vii. 9, 10.

For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow. [Job, viil. 9. One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet. And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure. [Job, xxi. 23,25

Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

[Prov. xi. 4.

DEBT.

Owe no man anything.

DECEIT.

[Rom. xiii. 8.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend: but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

[Prov. xxvii. 6. but afterwards [Prov. xx. 17.

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

[Eph. v. 6. My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away.

[Job, vi. 15. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

[Ps. ci. 7.

Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay : for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

DEFILEMENT.

[ Isa. xxix. 15-16.

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man ; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defiletha

man.

[Math. xv. 11.

[blocks in formation]

Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

DISOBEDIENCE.

[Mark, vii. 18-23.

If ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; and if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart and ye shall sow your seed in vain; for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then will I punish you seven times more for your sins. And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass. And your strength shall be spent in vain for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you, according to your sins. I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your highways shall be desolate. And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within
