HOSPITALITY-HUMILITY.

HOSPITALITY.

Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. [1 Peter, iv. 9, 10. He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

[Prov. xxii. 9. When thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: but thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. [Luke, xiv. 13, 14.

But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. [2 Cor. ix. 6, 7. Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.

HUMILITY.

[1 Peter, iii. 8.

Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. [Prov. xvi. 19. The mean shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled. [Isai. v. 15. Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility. [Prov. xviii. 12. Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. [Phil. ii. 3.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [Matt. v. 3, 5.

And whosoever shalt exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

[Math. xxiii. 12.

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and

thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosever exalteth himself shall be abased ; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

[Luke, xiv. 8-11. Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with dili gence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the shall lift you up.

Humble yourselves therefore under the God, that he may exalt you in due time. By humility and the fear of the Lord are and life.

God resisteth the proud, but giveth humble.

[Rom. xii. 8. Lord, and he [James, iv. 10. mighty hand of [1 Peter, v. 6. riches, honour, [Prov. 22, 4. grace unto the [James, iv. 6.

Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear; to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

[Ps. x. 17, 18.

A man's pride shall bring him low, but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. [Prov. xxix. 23. [Ps. ix. 12. [Job, xxii. 29.

He forgetteth not the cry of the humble. He shall save the humbled person. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a Publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the Publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. [Luke, xviii. 10-14. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

[Math. xviii. 4.

This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. [Matth. xv. 8.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, ye make him two. fold more the child of hell than yourselves.

[Matt. xxiii. 13-15. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye pay tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful out. ward, but are within full of dead men's bones and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe unto you, scribes, and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous. [Matt. xxiii. 23-29.

Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? [Isai. xxix. 15.

Knoweth thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth. That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

[Job, XX. 4, 5.

HYPOCRISY-IDLENESS.

39

So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish : [Job, viii. 13. Jesus said in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the market-places, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts, which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. [Mark, xii. 38, 39, 40. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand to tread my courts? bring no more vain oblations: incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. And when ye spread forth your hands I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

[Isai. i. 11-15.

A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. [James, i, 8.

IDLENESS AND SLOTH.

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. [Prov. vi. 6-11.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

[Prov. xx. 4, 13.

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

[Prov. xxi. 25.

IDLENESS IDOLATRY.

The slothful man saith, there is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

Drowsiness shall cover a man with rags.

By much slothfulness the building through idleness of the hands the through.

[Prov. xxii. 13.

[Pror. xxiii. 21. decayeth; and house droppeth [Eccles. x. 18.

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. [Prov. xix. 15.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; and lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well, I looked upon it, and received instruction. [Prov. xxiv. 30-32.

IDOLATRY.

Thou shalt

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my com. mandments.

Ye shall not make with me gods of shall ye make unto you gods of gold. He that sacrificeth unto any god, save only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee. [Exod. xxiii. 32, 33. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods. [xxxiv. 17.

Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods I am the Lord your God. [Lev. xix. 4.
