46 JUSTIFICATION (FROM SIN)-KNOWLEDGE. die ; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son ; much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

[Rom. v. 1-11. Therefore, as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righte. ousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto jus. tification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners; so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. KNOWLEDGE.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge : but fools despise wisdom and instruction. [Prov. i. 7.

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

(Prov. xxiii, 12. Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

(Prov. xxii. 17. For wisdom is a defence, and money is à defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

[Eccles. vii. 12. Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge.

[Prov. xii. 1. The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. (Prov. xxii. 12.

A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

LENDING (TO THE POOR.)

47 LENDING If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. If thou at all take thy neigh. bour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: for that is his covering only; it is his raiment for his skin : wherein shall he sleep and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

[Exod. xxii. 25-27. When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee. And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: in any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God.

[Deut. xxiv. 10-13. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest : for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

[St. Luke, vi. 35. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

[St. Matth. v. 42. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

LIBERTY-LOVE (to or of GOD).

LIBERTY.
Where the spirit of the Lord is—there is liberty,

[2 Cor. iii. 17. LOVE (to or Of GOD.) Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart : and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thiue house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

(Deut. vi. 5-9. I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor an. gels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. viii. 38, 39. If any man love God, the same is known of him.

(1 Cor. viii. 3. Let us not love in word, neither in tongne; but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And what. soever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him : and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

11 John, iii. 18-24. We know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John, v. 2, 3.

LUST-LYING.

49 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

[St. Matth. xxii. 36-38. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will mani. fest myself to him.

(John, xiv, 21. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

(John, xiv. 23. For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

LUST.
When lust hath conceived it bringeth forth sin.

LYING. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbonr.

[Exod. xx. 16. Deal not falsely, neither lie one to another.

(Lev. xix. 11. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house : he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

[Ps. ci. 7. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. A false wit ness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

[Prov. xxi. 6, 28. A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

LYING. Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.

(Prov. xii. 22. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it: and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. (Prov. xxvi. 28.

He that speaketh lies shall perish, (Prov. xix. 9.

Put away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour : for we are members one of another.

[Ephes. iv. 25. He that will love life, and see good days, let him re. frain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.

[1 Peter, iii. 10. A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

(Prov. xix. 9. Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

(Prov. xvii. 7. Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an uprighteous witness.

[Exod. xxiii, 1, A faithful witness will not lie : but a false witness will utter lies.

[Prov. xiv. 5. If a false witness rise up against any man, to testify against him that which is wrong; then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges which shall be in those days; and the judges shall make diligent inquisi. tion : and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his bro. ther : so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

(Deut. xix. 16-19. A certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast pot lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
