MERCY. hath quickened us together with Christ; (by grace ye are saved ;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus; That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves : it is the gift of God.

(Ephes. ii. 4-8. The kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour ; that, being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

[Luke, vi. 36. If ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and uot sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

[Matth. xii. 7. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judg. ment.

[Prov. xxviii, 13. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts : and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

MIRTH-MODERATION-MURDER.

57 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck j write them upon the table of thine heart.

(Prov. iii. 3.

MIRTH. A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance. He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

[Prov. xv. 13-15. MODERATION. Hast thou found honey eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

[Prov. 25. 16.

MURDER. Thou shalt not kill.

[Exod. xx. 13. And surely your blood of your lives will I require: at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed : for in the image of God made he man.

[Gen. ix. 5, 6. He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deli. ver him into his hand : then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall fee. But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die

[Exod. xxi. 12-14, If a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished for he is his money. (Exod. xxi. 20, 21.

He that killeth any man shall surely be put to death. And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast. And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him ; Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it ; and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death. Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stran. ger, as for one of your own country. (Lev. xxiv. 17-22. 58

MURDER. Thou shalt give life for life.

(Exod, xxi. 23. Every one that killeth any person, if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer : the murderer shall surely be put to death. And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer : the murderer shall surely be put to death. Or if he smite him with an hand-weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a mur. derer : the murderer shall surely be put to death. The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer : when he meeteth him, he shall slay him. But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die ; he that smote him shall surely be put to death ; for he is a murderer; the revenger of blood shall slay the mur. derer when he meeteth him. But if he thrust him sud. denly without enmity, or liave cast upon him any thing without laying of wait, or with any stone wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments: and the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congre. gation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, wbither he was fled ; and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil. But if the sla shall at any time come without the bor. der of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled; and the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer : he shall not be guilty of blood; because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession. So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you, throughout your generations, in all your dwellings. Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses : but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. Moreover, ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

[Numb. xxxv. 15-31.
