POOR. The Lord heareth the poor.

(Ps. lxix. 33. Much food is in the tillage of the poor. (Prov. xiii. 23.

The poor shall never cease out of the land : therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

(Deut. xv. 11. Blessed is he that considereth the poor : the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth : and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing : thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

(Ps. xli. 1-3. The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory : for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.

(1 Sam. ii. 7-8. He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.

[Job, xxxvi. 15. He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.

[Prov. xiv, 31. He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

(Prov. xxii. 16. Rob not the poor, because he is poor ; neither oppress the afflicted in the gate : for the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

(Prov. xxii. 22, 23, Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the king. dom which he hath promised to them that love him but ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

[James, ii. 56. He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth : but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. [Prov. xiv. 21.

I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

(Ps. cxl. 12. When the poor and needy seek water, and there is


75 none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

(Ps. cxii. 9. Jesus lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor : for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy : for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But woe unto you that are rich ! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full ? for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now ! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you ! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

POWER (God's). Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner-stone thereof, when the morning-stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb ? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling-band for it, and brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, and said, hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed ? Hast thou com. manded the morning since thy days; and caused the day-spring to know his place.

(Job, xxxviii. 4-12. Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth declare if thou knowest it all.

POWER (GOD's). loose the band of Orion ? canst thou bring forth Mazza. roth in his season or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? knowest thou the ordinances of heaven canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are? who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart? who can number the clouds in wisdom or who can stay the bottles of heaven, when the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together? wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion, or fill the appetite of the young lions, when they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place in all genera. tions. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God, Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yes. terday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep :


PRAISE TO GOD. in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled, thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath; we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow : for it is soon cut off, and we fiy away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

(Ps. xc. 1-12. Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord : or what is the place of my rest? hath not my hand made all these things?

PRAISE TO GOD. I will extol thee, my God, O King; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One gencration shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy won. drous works. And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts; and I will declare thy greatness. They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. The Lord is gracious and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The Lord is good to all; and his tender mercies are over all his works. All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their
