PRAYER-PRIDE.

81 ness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women women professing godliness) with good works. [1 Tim. ii. 1-10.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. [James, i. 5-7.

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. [James, v. 13-16.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto God, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. [Job, xxii. 27.

The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the

prayer of the righteous.

[Prov, xv. 29.

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer be. lieving, ye shall receive.

[Matth. xxi. 22,

[James, iv. 6.

God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. [Isai. ii. 11, 17.

I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. [Isai. xiii. 11.

He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. [1 Tim. vi. 4, 5.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. [Ps. xii. 2, 3.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised wisdom. Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. [Prov. xiii. 10-11.

[Prov. xv. 25. Pride compasseth the wicked about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression they speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. [Ps. lxxiii. 6-9. [Jer. xiii. 15.

PROVIDENCE (OF GOD).

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. [Eccles. ix. 11.

Therefore take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into Are ye barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. not much better than they? Which of you, by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin; and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more. clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, what shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these

things do the Gentiles seek :) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. [Matth. vi. 25-34.

Fear not; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that falleth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. [Luke, xii. 32-34. Whosoever shall seek to save his life, shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life, shall preserve it.

[Luke, xvii. 33. The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
