them is, and resteth the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it.

[Exod. xx. 8-11.

Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thine handmaid and the stranger may be refreshed. [Exod. xxiii. 12.

Six days thou shalt work; but on the seventh day thou shalt rest in earing-time and in harvest thou shalt rest. [Exod. xxxiv. 21.

Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death. Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habita. tions upon the sabbath-day. [Exod. xxxv. 2, 3.

And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked Jesus, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-days? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath-day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath-days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. [Matth. xii. 10-13.

I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

[Exkl. xx. 12. [Ezkl. xliv. 24.

Hallow my sabbaths. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary I am the Lord.

The sabbath was made for man, and sabbath.

[Mark, ii. 27.

Blessed is the man that keepeth the sabbath.

[Isai. lvi. 2.

From one sabbath to another shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. [Isai. Ixvi. 23.

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt

SACRAMENT-SALVATION.

101 thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. [Isai. lviii. 13, 14.

SACRAMENT.

The Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. [1 Cor. xi. 23-30.

SALVATION.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him even into his ears. [Ps. xviii. 2-6.

For God saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. [2 Cor. vi. 2. How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;

which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.

[Heb. ii. 3. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. [Heb. v. 8, 9.

As it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment; so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time, without sin, unto salvation. [Heb. ix. 27, 28.

SCANDAL.

A tale bearer revealeth secrets, but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. [Prov. xi. 13. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

[Prov. xxvi. 22.

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: where there is no tale-bearer, the strife ceaseth.

SCRIPTURE.

[Prov. xxvi. 20.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

[2 Tim. iii. 16, 17. Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. [Isai. xxxiv. 16.

SECRECY.

God's eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

[Job, xxxiv. 21, 22.

SELF EXAMINATION-SERVANTS-SICKNESS. 103

SELF EXAMINATION.

Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. [2 Cor. xiii. 5.

SERVANTS.

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service. because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. [1 Tim. vi. 1, 2. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good-will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. [Eph. vi. 5-8.

Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done and there is no respect of persons. [Col. iii. 22-25. Let servants be obedient unto their own masters, and please them well in all things; not answering again; not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. [Titus, ii. 9, 10.

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: even a fool when he holdeth his peace is counted wise, and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. [Prov. xvii. 27-28.

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. [1 Tim. ii. 11-12.

SIN.

If thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.

[Gen. iv. 7. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. [Ps. i. 1-6.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper.

[Prov. xxviii. 13. The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. [Rom. i. 18.

As by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (for until the law sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead; much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by
