It is noteworthy that an increased admiration for Chateaubriand has been evinced in France within recent years, and the belief is justified that an edition of the Atala and René may stimulate a renewed inter est in the author among teachers and students in this country.

The text used in the present volume has been taken from the octavo edition published by Garnier Freres, and the older orthography in oi, as there given, has been preserved. A few slight corrections have been found necessary, some minor changes in punctuation have seemed advisable, and such brief omissions have been made in the subject-matter as our classroom standards would suggest.
