CHAP. XI.

Concerning Baptism, and Bread and

Wine.

Queft.-HOW many baptifms are there?
A. One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
Q. What is this baptifm?

Eph. 4. 5.

3.21.22

A. The like figure, whereunto even 1 Pet. baptifm doth now fave us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good confcience towards God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift, who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities, and powers, being made fubject unto him.

Q. What faith John the Baptift of Chrift's baptifm? How diftinguisheth he it from his?

A. I indeed baptize you with water unto Mat. repentance; but he that cometh after me, 3. II. is mightier than I, whofe fhoes I am not worthy to bear, he fhall baptize you with the Holy Ghoft, and with fire.

4, 5.

Q. Doth not Chrift fo diftinguish it also? A. And being affembled together with Acts 1. them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerufalem, but wait for the promife of the Father, which, faith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water, but ye fhall be baptized with the Holy Ghoft, not many days hence. Q. Doth

this?

A. And as I began to fpeak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he faid, John indeed baptized with water; but ye fhall be bap tized with the Holy Ghoft.

Q. Then it feems John's baptifm must pass away, that Chrift's may take place; becaufe John muft decreafe, that Chrift may increase. John A. He must increase, but I muft decrease.

Q. I perceive then many may be sprinkled with, and dipped and baptized in, water, and yet not truly baptized with the baptifm of Chrift: What are the real effects in fuch as are truly baptized with the baptifm of Chrift?

A. Know ye not, that fo many of us as 6.3,4 were baptized into Jefus Chrift, were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptifm into death, that like as Chrift was raifed up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we alfo fhould walk in newnefs of life.

For as many of you as have been bap2. 27. tized into Chrift, have put on Christ.

Buried with him in baptifm, wherein alfo ye are rifen with him, through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Q. I perceive there was a baptifm of water, which was John's baptifm, and is therefore by John himself contra-diftinguished from Christ's: Was there not likewife fomething of the like nature appointed by Christ to his difciples, of eating bread, and drinking wine, in ́ remembrance of him?

II. 23,

A. For I have received of the Lord, I Cor. that which alfo I delivered unto you, that 24, 25. the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me. After the fame manner alfo he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the New Teftament in my blood this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Q. How long was this to continue ?

A. For as often as ye eat this bread, 1 Cor. and drink this cup, ye do fhew the Lord's II. 26. death till he come.

Q. Did Chrift promife to come again to his difciples?

23.

A. I will not leave you comfortless; I John will come to you. Jefus anfwered and faid 14. 18. unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Q. Was this an inward coming?

A. At that day ye fhall know that I am 14. 20. in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Q. But it would feem, this was even practifed by the church of Corinth after Chrift was come inwardly: Was it fo, that there were certain appointments pofitively commanded, yea, and zealously and confcientiously practised by the faints of old, which were not of perpetual continuance, nor yet now needful to be practifed in the church?

one another's feet. For I have given you

an example, that ye fhould do as I have done to you.

For it feemed good to the Holy Ghost 28, 29. and to us, to lay upon you no greater burthen than thefe neceffary things; that ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things ftrangled, and from fornication; from which, if ye keep yourselves, ye fhall do well: fare ye

well.

James Is any man fick among you? Let him 5.14 call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

Q. Thefe commands are no less pofitive than the other; yea, fome of them are afferted as the very fenfe of the Holy Ghoft, as no less neceffary

necessary than abstaining from fornication, and yet the generality of Proteftants have laid them afide, as not of perpetual continuance. But what other feriptures are there to shew that it is not necessary, that of bread and wine to continue?

14. 17.

A. For the kingdom of God is not meat Rom. and drink; but righteoufnefs, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

16. 20,

Let no man therefore judge you in meat Col. 2. or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or to 22of the new moon, or of the fabbath days. Wherefore if ye be dead with Chrift from -the rudiments of the world; why, as though living in the world, are ye fubject to, ordinances, (Touch not, tafte not, handle not: which all are to perish with thenfing) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

Q. These scriptures are very plain, and say as much for the abolishing of this, as to any neceffity, as ought can be alledged for the former but what is the bread then, wherewith the faints are to be nourished?

A. Then Jefus faid unto them, Verily, John 6. verily, fay unto you, Mofes gave, you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh. down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then faid they unto him, H: 3 Lord,
