His name fhall be called Wonderful.

He was the son of Adam, the fon of Noah, the fon of Shem, the son of Abraham, the son of Ifaac, the fon of Jacob, the fon of Judah, the fon of David, the fon of Solomon, the fon of Rehoboam, &c. &c. and the fon of Jofeph the hufband of Mary, and has been known and called the Son of Man from age to age; and yet he is no man's fon, nor would he fuffer himself to be fo called. "What think ye of Chrift, whose fon is he? They fay unto him, The Son of David. How then doth David in fpirit call him Lord, faying, The Lord faid unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footftool. If David then call him Lord, how is he his fon?" Matt. xxii. 42-44.

There were thousands of millions born before him; that is wonderful; and yet he was the first that ever was born: "Alfo I will make him, my firft-born, higher than the kings of the earth: my mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant fhall ftand faft with him." Pfalm lxxxix. 27, 28.

As he had many fathers, fo it is as plain that le had many mothers: he was the fon of Eve,

the son of Sarah, the fon of Rebekah, the son of Leah, the fon of Rahab, the son of Ruth, the fon of Zion, the son of Mary, and the fon of all believers: "For whofoever fhall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the fame is my brother, and fifter, and mother." Matt. xii. 50. Thus he hath many fathers, and thousands of mothers-and yet "he is without father, and without mother." Heb. vii. 3.

According to the genealogies written by Matthew and Luke, his defcent is traced from Adam; he defcended likewife from God, and he defcended from heaven; and yet he defcended neither from God nor man, for "he is without defcent, and without pedigree." Heb. vii. 3.

Elijah raised a child from the dead, and Elisha raised another; and even a young man just buried, when he touched the bones of Elifha, came to life; Chrift raised the widow of Nain's fon and Lazarus; all which were raifed before the death of Chrift, and yet he was the first that was ever raised-“ He is the firft-begotten from the dead.". Rev. i. 5. "He is the firft fruits of them that fleep." 1 Cor. xv. 20. trod the path of life wilt not leave my foul

And the firft that ever from the tomb: "Thou in hell; neither wilt thou fuffer

fuffer thine Holy One to fee corruption; thou wilt fhew me the path of life: in thy prefence is fulnefs of joy, and at thy right hand there are pleafures for evermore." Pfal. xvi. 10, 11.

His name fhall be called Wonderful.

When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he fet a compass upon the face of the depth: when he established the clouds above: when he ftrengthened the fountains of the deep: when he gave to the fea his decree, that the waters fhould not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by him, as one brought up with him; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; rejoicing in the habitable parts of his earth; and my delights were with the fons of men." Prov. viii. 27-31. And, though he thus rejoiced in the habitable parts of his earth, yet there was no part of his earth then inhabited; and, though his delights were then with the fons of men, yet there were no fons of men to delight in.

Jefus, our Immanuel, never lived nor existed before he was born of Mary; and it is plain that he was but thirty-three years of age when he died, and yet he had neither beginning of days, nor end of life." Heb. vii, 3.

Our Immanuel maintained and fupported all the human race in life when he was expiring himself; and lived King of Glory in heaven when he lay dead in the tomb.

When he afcended on high he entered heaven, and there he must abide till the end: "Whom the heavens muft receive until the times of reftitution of all things." Acts iii. 21. And yet," behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him, nor yet the house that Solomon built." 1 Kings viii. 27.

As our high priest, "" He, by his own blood, entered into the holy place," Heb. ix. 12; " into heaven itself, now to appear in the prefence of God for us." Heb. ix. 24. Thus he entered the holy of holies, and appears in the prefence of God for his people, yet " he is with us always to the world's end." Luke xxviii. 20,

He is "flefh of our flefh, and bone of our bone;" and therefore real man, perfect man, and the fon of man; and yet he is "a worm and no man." Pfal. xxii. 6. Not a man, but a thing: "There

fore alfo that holy thing, which shall be born of thee, fhall be called the Son of God." Luke i. 35.

His name fhall be called Wonderful.

When he was a child juft born, and a fon given, the government of the church and of the whole world ftood upon his fhoulders; Ifa. ix. 6; and yet he could not walk alone himself, but had an afs to carry him and his mother into Egypt.

Ilis name fhall be called Wonderful.

"All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." John i. 3. "For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in earth, vifible and invifible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things confift." 'Col. i. 16, 17. Yea, even " the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath fet the world upon them." 1 Sam. ii. 8. And yet the earth hath neither bafes nor pillars; this the fcriptures witnefs: "He ftretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing." Job xxvi. 7.
