A. The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell consists in the guilt of Adam's first sin a, the want of original righteousness b, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called original sin c, together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it d.

20 Q. Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?

A. God having, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity elected some to everlasting life a, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation, by a Redeemer b. a Ephes. i. 4. According as he hath cho

sen us in him, before the foundation of the world.

b Rom. iii. 21. But now the righteousness of God, without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe.

21 Q. Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?

A. The only Redeemer of God's elect is the Lord Jesus Christ a, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man b, and so was, and continueth to be, God and man, in two distinct natures, and one person c for ever d.
