the answer of a good conscience towards God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

92 Q. What is a sacrament?

A. A sacrament is an holy ordinance, instituted by Christ, wherein by sensible signs, Christ and the benefits of the new covenant are represented a, sealed and applied to believers b.

a Gen. xvii. 10. This is my covenant which ye shall keep between me and you, and thy seed after thee, every man child among you shall be circumcised.

b Rom. iv. 11. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised.

93 Q. What are the sacraments of the New Testament?

A. The sacraments of the New Testament are baptism a, and the Lord's supper b.

a Mark xvi. 16. He that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved,

b 1 Cor. xi. 23. For I have received of the Lord that which I also delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread, &c.

94 Q. What is baptism?

A. Baptism is a sacrament, wherein

the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost a, doth signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace b, and our engagement to be the Lord's c.

a Matt. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

b Rom. vi. 3. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death.

c Rom. vi. 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

95 Q. To whom is baptism to be administered?

A. Baptism is not to be administered to any who are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him a ; but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized b.

a Acts ii. 41. Then they that gladly received his word, were baptized.

b Gen. xvii. 7. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee in their generation, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. This is my covenant which ye shall keep, between me and you, and thy seed after thee, every man-child among you

shall be circumcised.

Acts ii. 38. Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39. For the promise is to you and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

96 Q. What is the Lord's supper?

A. The Lord's supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine according to Christ's appointment, his death is shewed forth a, and the worthy receivers are,, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace b.

a Luke xxii. 19. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it; and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me. 20.

Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you.

b 1 Cor. x. 26. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

97 Q. What is required to the worthy receiving of the Lord's supper?

A. It is required of them who would worthily partake of the Lord's supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body a, of their faith to feed upon him b, of their repentance c, love d, and new obedience e, lest coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves f.

a 1 Cor. xi. 28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

b 2 Cor. xiii. 28. Examine yourselves whether ve be in the faith.

c 1 Cor. xi. 31. If we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

d 1 Cor. xi. 13. When you come together in the church, I hear there be divisions among

you. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. e 1 Cor. v. 8. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

f 1 Cor. xi. 27. Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

98 Q. What is prayer?

A. Prayer is an offering up of our desires to God a, for things agreeable to his will b, in the name of Christ c, with confession of our sins d, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies e.

a Psalm lxii. 8. Trust in him at all times, ye people, pour out your hearts before him; God is a refuge for us.
