Lewdness threatened and punished.

Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

Jer. 23. 14. I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies:- -they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall.

Nah. 3. 4. Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts;—And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing stock. And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Ninevah is laid waste: who will bemoan her? Mal. 3. 5. And I will come near to you in judgment: and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers.

1 Cor. 6. 9. Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind- -shall inherit the kingdom of God.

I Cor. 10. 8. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. [See Numbers 25. 1-9.]

Gal. 5. 19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ep. 5. 5. For this know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and o

God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Heb. 13. 4. Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Jude 7. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Rev. 21. 8. But whoremongers, and sorcerersshall have their part in the lake of fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Rev. 22. 15.

For without are dogs, and sorcerers,

and whoremongers.

372. Ought the sin of lewdness to be exposed and rebuked?

Dt. 29. 29. The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us, and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Is. 53. 1. Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Mk. 8. 38. Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinfu! generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

1 Tim. 5. 20. Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

373. Ought we to withhold fellowship from lewd per

sons ?

1 Cor. 5. 11. I have written unto you not to keep

company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater with such a one, no not to eat.

Ep. 5. 11. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Liberality.

374. Is liberality enjoined?

Ec. 11. 1. Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

Mat. 10. 8. Freely ye have received, freely give.

Lk. 3. 11. He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

Lk. 12. 33. Sell that ye have, and give alms: provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Lk. 16. 9. Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 13. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him.

Ac. 20. 35. I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Liberality required-Tends to prosperity.

1 Tim. 6. 17. Charge them that are rich-That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Heb. 13. 16. To do good, and to communicate, forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

375. Is liberality to the poor expressly required?

Lev. 19. 9. When ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger. Lev. 32. 22.

Lev. 25. 35 If thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner, that he may live with thee.

Lk. 18. 22. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

1 Jn. 3. 17. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? Dt. 15. 7-11.

376. Does liberality tend to prosperity ?

Ps. 37. 3. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 25. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

Ps. 112. 5. A good man showeth favor, and lendeth:

he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved forever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

Pr. 11. 24. There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth, shall be watered also himself.

Lk. 6.38. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.

2 Cor. 9. 6. He which soweth sparingly, shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully, shall reap also bountifully.God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound towards you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.

377. Is liberality exemplified?

Job 29. 12. I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
