Rules of discipline.

witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the Church: but if he neglect to hear the Church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican.

1 Cor. 5. 4. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 11. But now I have written unto you, not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner, with such a one, no not to eat. 13. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Gal. 6. 1. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself lest thou also be tempted.

2 Th. 3. 6. Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received from us. 14. If any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

Tit. 3. 10. A man that is an heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Rev. 2. 2. I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil; and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not; and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast labored, and hast not fainted.

Rules of edification.

103. What directions are given for the edification of churches?

Rom. 12. 4. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office; So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching: or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. 10. Be kindly affectioned one to another, with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another.

Rom. 14. 19. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Ep. 4. 15. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ: From which the whole body fitly joined together, and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, making increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Col. 3. 16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Heb. 10. 24, 25.

1 Th. 5. 11. Wherefore, comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Heb. 3. 13 Exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Heb. 10. 24. Let us consider one another, to provoke unto love, and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some

is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

104. Is the Church of Christ one body?

1 Cor. 12. 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one spirit.

Ep. 4. 4. There is one body, and one spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all.

105. Is Christian union required?

2 Cor. 13. 11. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace.

Ep. 4. 1. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, be seech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all.

11-16.

Ph. 1. 27. Stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel: And in nothing terrified by your adversaries.

Ph. 2. 1. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels of mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Ph. 3. 16. Let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

106. Is Christian union desirable and attainable?

Ps. 133. 1. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is, for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is like the precious ointment upon the head.

Jn. 17. 20. Neither pray I for these alone; but for

Divisions.

them also which shall believe on me through their word: That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they all may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.

Ac. 4. 32. And the multitude of them that believved were of one heart, and of one soul.

107. What is said respecting divisions and separations ?

Pr. 6. 16. These six things doth the Lord hate; yea seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue; 19. And him that soweth discord among brethren.

Mat. 12. 25. Every kingdom divided against itself, is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself, shall not stand.

Rom. 16. 17. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences, contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such, serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

1 Cor. 1. 10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you: but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and, I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided?

1 Cor. 3. 3. Whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

1 Cor. 13. 25. God hath tempered the body to

gether, having given more abundant honor to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Gal. 5. 15. If ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

Jude 18. They told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

108. Are unchristian unions forbidden?·

Lk. 12. 51. Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? Ktell you, Nay; but rather division.

2 Cor. 6. 14. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you; and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
