judgment-ball, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou ? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him : but the Jews cried out, saying, if thou let this man go, thou art not Cesar's friend : whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cesar.
When Pilate, therefore, heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judg. ment-seat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King ! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King ? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar. Then delivered he him, therefore, unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he, bearing his cross, went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha ; where they crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews; for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city : and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among them. selves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be : that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished : and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. And the graves were opened ; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, 'Truly this was the Son of God.
The Jews because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, (for that sabbath-day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers and brake the less of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs : But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forth with came thereout blood and water.
And he that saw it, bare record, and his record is true ; and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also !, inself was Jesus' disciple : he went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And wlien Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock : and be rolled a great stone to the door of the sepul. chre, and departed. And there was Mary Niaga dalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
Now the next day that followed the day of
the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command, therefore, that the sepulchre he made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead ; so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch ; go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
DEPRAVITY OF MAN. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked : who can know it?
The heart of the sons of men is full of evil. The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth.
Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
There is no man that sinneth not.
There is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure frem sin ?
What is man that he should be clean, and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous ? Behold he (God) putteth no trust in his saints ; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water ?
They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
What is man that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man that thou visitest him ?
We were by nature children of wrath, even as others. You were dead in trespasses and sins.
I know, that in me, (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death ?
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity: and in sin did my mother conceive me. ·
The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of inen, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are altogether become filthy : there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
There is none righteous, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the 'poison of asps is under their lips : whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness : their feet are swift to shed blood : destruction and misery are in their ways: and the way of peace have they not known : there is no fear of God before their eyes.
Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniguity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None callech for: justice, nor any pleadet! for truth: they trist in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischiel, and bring forth iniquit;. . They lutch
