A highly important text by Thomas South, the English Platonist (c. 1785 - c. 1855) who moved in the circle of Thomas Taylor and the journal "The Zoist". South believed that the trance or magnetic experience cited in Mesmerism and hypnosis was a rediscovery of the secrets of antiquity; ancient Egyptian and Indian statues show "magnetic postures".
