A highly important text by Thomas South, the English Platonist (c. 1785 - c. 1855) who moved in the circle of Thomas Taylor and the journal "The Zoist". South believed that the trance or magnetic experience cited in Mesmerism and hypnosis was a rediscovery of the secrets of antiquity; ancient Egyptian and Indian statues show "magnetic postures". According to South, these secrets spread from Egypt to the Hebrews and later to the Greeks. See Joscelyn Godwin, "The Theosophical Enlightenment", SUNY 1994, pp. 232 ss.
