AFRICAN INSTITUTION.

THE Annual Meeting of this berevolent Institution was held March 25, 1808, at Free Mason's Tavern, London, the Duke of Gloucester in the Chair. A Report of the Proceedings of the Committee was read, and the substance of it ordered to be printed.

The Committee have commenced a correspondence with the GoverBors of Sierra Leone and Cape Coast Castle, and with other gentlemen in Africa, whose cominunications are likely materially to promote the objects of the Institution. Inquiries have been made respecting the moral, intellectual, and political state of the natives, as well as concerning the most promising articles of agriculture and commerce..

It is, however, but by slow degrees that we can expect the horrible effects of the Slave Trade will be effectually counteracied; some very shocking fruits of which were mentioned; among which it was stated, that thousands of square miles are left without an inhabit

ant!'

It afforded great satisfaction to learn that two armed vessels had been sent by Government to the

coast, to prevent the infraction or evasion of the abolition law; that a Court of Vice-Admiralty is to be established at Sierra Leone, and a commission of three gentlemen appointed for the same purpose.

A more full account of the proceedings and prospects of the Institulion may be expected when the In the meanReport is printed.

time, it is proper to say, that the liberal contributions of the publie are necessary to aid the great and good design in view.

A man of the name of Blake was lately executed at Kilmainham, in Ireland, for a highway robbery, which he committed on his return from witnessing the exccution of a friend for a like offence.-How deplorably hard is the human heart! CAUTION. Several of the unfortunate young women now in the London Fenitentiary, ascribe their

ruia to their attendance at Bártholomew Fair, and various Fairs in the country. We hope this will operate as a caution to parents,

masters, mistresses, and others, not to suffer young women under their care to attend those scenes of dissipation and lewdness.

JESUS,

THE

Tutimate Song of Jews and Gentiles.

BY THE LATE MR. J. BISHOP,

OF GUERNSEY.

Communicated by the Rev. A. Bishop, of Ringwood.

Lo! God is gone up with a shout,
The shout of the myriads of Heav'n,
Who, glowing with rapture, cry out,
All glory to Jesus be giv'n!'
Ye people of Britain, rejoice!
Let Europe resound with the song ;
The universe catch the glad noise,
And roll the loud numbers along!
All glory to Jesus be giv'n!'
Who now is ascended on high;
He came from his glory in Heav'n,
For perishing sinners to die!
He satisfy'd all the demands
Of justice, of law, and of God;
Obey'd all the holy commands,
And wash'd away sin by his blood!
Is this the despis'd Nazarene ?
And Joseph, the carpenter's sqn ?
Will he who was crucify'd reign,
And sit in the midst of the throne?
Yes! this is the Man we adore,-
Our great Mediator in Heav'n;
And, therefore, we sing evermore,
All glory to Jesus be giv'n!'
Our brethren, the Jews, yet despise
Our glorious Messiah and King;
And wilfully close up their eyes
Against the bright truth that we bring!
The prophets and Moses declare
What Christ, the Messiah, should be;
And witnessing facts make appear,
That Jesus of Beth'lem is he!
The promises all are fulfill'd,
The prophecies centre in him;
And he, the Messiah, reveal'd

To Gentiles and Hebrews the same!

The Gentiles have heard of the grace
Of Jesus, their crucify'd Lord :
They fly, and salvation embrace,
And trust in the truth of his word!
Ye children of Abram, be wise;
Come, hear the glad tidings of peace :
The Jesus whom now ye despise
Is able to sign your release;

And can you yet longer refuse ?
And will you contend against God?
Beware, O ye obstinate Jews,
Lest vengeance should speak from his
blood!

But midst the dark cloud that appears,
We see a bright morning draw nigh:
A few revolutions of spheres,

And Christ shall descend from on high.

We see him his banners erect,
And all of you flock to his arms :
With pleasure, we daily reflect
What rapture will flow from his charm
Then Gentile and Jew shall be one;
One Shepherd shall guide us along,-
We'll join in surrounding the throne,
And burst into one common song!
With angels unitedly sing
His honours, woves us with blood;
While Heaven's high arches shall ring
With praises eternal to God!

MISSIONARY HYMN.

FROM THE REV. MR. KELLY'S HYMNS

My soul, with sacred joy survey
The glories of the latter day:
Its dawn already seems begun,
And promises a future Sun!

The friends of truth assembled stand
(A chosen consecrated hand):
The standard of the cross display,
And cry aloud, Behold the way!'
Behold the way to Zion's hill,
Where Isra'l's God delights to dwell
He fixes there his lofty throne,
And calls the sacred place his own.'

Behold the way,' ye heralds cry: Spare not, but lift your voices high: Convey the sound from shore to shope, And bid the captive sigh no more! Swift on the wings of heav'nly zeal They fly, nor seem their toils to feel; But, faithful to their Master's will, Their sacred embassy fulfil,
