CHAP. IV

THEN was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward a hungered

3 And when the tempter caine to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceed eth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, aud setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee; and in their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a

stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up.

17 | From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of

20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedce, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mend ing their nets; and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed bim.

23 ¶ And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness, and all manner of disease, among the people.

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get 25 And there followed him great Chee hence, Satan; for it is written, multitudes of people from Galilee,

7 Blessed are the merciful; for they ahall obtain mercy.

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil; but whosoever shall snite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee the law, and take away thy coat, him have thy cloak also.

2 Therefore, when thou doest thing alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth;

4 That thine alms may be in secret and thy Father, which seeth in secret, himself shall reward thee openly.

5 T And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, ente. into thy closet; and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father, which seeih in secret, shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

13 And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14 ¶ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
