Previously published in 1907 and 1909, John Manly provides the reader with a sampling of English prose and poetry that ranged through the years 1137–1892. For example, leading in “Early Middle English” was an excerpt from The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: “This gaere for the king Stephne ofer sae to Normandi . . .” was also presented in more recent translation as “This year went King Stephen over the sea to Normandy . . .” Some excellent snippets of information are found in the notes that clue the reader into other valuable sources to search and consult.
