T

HAT Mr.MACLAURIN had, many years ago, intended to publish a TreaXxx tife on this fubject, appears from à letter, dated April 19, 1729, to his honoured friend MARTIN FOLKES, Efq; now Prefident of the Royal Society *. And we find, in one of his Manufcripts, the Plan of fuch a Work, agreeing, almoft in every article, with the contents of this Volume.

Had the celebrated Author lived to publish his own Work, his name would, alone, have been fufficient to recommend it to the notice of the Publick: but that Task having, by his lamented premature death, devolved to the gentlemen whom he left entrusted with his Papers, the Reader may reafonably expect some account of the materials of which it confifts, and of the care that has been taken in collecting and difpofing them, fo as best to answer the Author's intention, and fill up the Plan he had defigned.
