Thy talent to improve take care;
For the great Day thyself prepare.
Let all thy converse be sincere,
Thy conscience as the noontide clear;
For God's all-seeing eye surveys

Thy secret thoughts, thy works and ways.
Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the Angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praise to the eternal King! Amen.

Or,

HYMN VI.

NEW every morning is the love
Our wakening and uprising prove;

Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life, and power, and thought.

New mercies, each returning day,
Hover around us while we pray ;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts cf God, new hopes of heaven.

If on our daily course our mind

Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be,
As more of heaven in each we see ;
Some softening gleam of love and prayer
Shall dawn on every cross and care.

The trivial round, the common task,
Will furnish all we need to ask,
Room to deny ourselves, a road
To bring us daily nearer God.
Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love,
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,

To live more nearly as we pray. Amen.

Read one of the Readings from HOLY SCRIPTURE' pages 68-138.

Reader. Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Congregation. Christ have mercy upon us.
Reader. Lord, have mercy upon us.

OUR

Reader and Congregation.

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Reader.

GOD, merciful Father, that despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as be sorrowful;

B

Mercifully assist our prayers that we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils, which the craft and subtilty of the devil or man worketh against us, be brought to nought; and by the providence of Thy goodness they may be dispersed; that we Thy servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto Thee in Thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOD, who art the author of peace and

lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us Thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we surely trusting in Thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty

and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; defend us in the same with Thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by Thy governance, to do always

that is righteous in Thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be said any other prayer or prayers, from the Special Prayers, pages 142-148, appropriate to the Christian Seasons or Especial Occasions.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Evening Prayer.

FOR TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS.

HYMN VII.

GLORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own Almighty wings!
Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die that so I may

Rise glorious at the awful day.

Oh, may my soul on Thee repose;

And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close,—

Sleep, that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Or,

HYMN VIII.

SUN of my soul, Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if Thou be near:
Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes.
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.
Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live :
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.
If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned, to-day, the Voice divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;
Let him no more lie down in sin.

Watch by the sick : enrich the poor
With blessings from Thy boundless store :
Be every mourner's sleep to-night,
Like infant's slumbers, pure and light.
