DIRECTIONS TO THE READER.

Directions as to standing and kneeling should be given by the Reader, when these are needed, on the principle of standing for praise and kneeling for prayer. As the Scripture Readings are short, sitting accommodation will not be usually needed. The Reader should give out the Hymns, verse by verse, until they are generally known.

So also he should read the whole of the Psalms, Canticles, and Responses, until the congregation is prepared to take part in saying these.

The Services are arranged on the foundation and principles of the Book of Common Prayer, as far as possible. None are provided for use on Sundays, because the Book of Common Prayer should then be adopted, which cannot be surpassed in excellence. This manual therefore only attempts to provide forms of united prayer for use on the mornings and evenings of week days.

Six of these are provided for use on the mornings and evenings of week days. They are purposely varied, to prevent monotony. The Hymns may be used at discretion, although two of these are incorporated in each Service to facilitate their use.

The Scripture Readings may, of course, be varied by others from the Word of God, but those selected are given for the convenience of Readers on shipboard.

Special Prayers and Thanksgivings on special occasions are provided, together with some Prayers for private use.

Morning Prayer.

FOR MONDAYS AND SATURDAYS.

When all are assembled, let the Reader and Congre gation (all standing) say,
