CHAPTER I. THE EXISTENCE OF ONE GOD.
GEN. 17: 1. Go D. 28: 13. And behold the Lord stood above it and said, I am the LoRD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac. . Ex. 3: 14. And the Lord said to Moses, I AM THAT I AM. 20: 1. And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lo RD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, , or any, likeness of any thing that is in hetiven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them. DEUT. 32: 39. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive ; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. Is A. 48: 10. Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lor D, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall

there be after me. I even I, am the LoRD ; and beside me there is no Savior. I have declared, and have saved, and I have showed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God. , Yea, before the day was, I am he ; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it? 42: 8. I am the Lo RD : that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 45: 5. I am the LoRD, and there ts none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LoRD, and there is none else.

There is no speech nor language know not the Lord, neither will I
where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. Isa. 40: 12. Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance 2 Ps. 100: 3. Know ye that the LoRD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves. 95: 3. For the Lo Rd is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hands are the deep places of the sea: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his and he made it; and his hands formed the dry land.
HEB. 3: 4. He that built all things is God. Acts 17:24. God, that made
the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. ZEc. 12: 1. Thus saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. RoM. 1: 20. The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, even his eternal power and Godhead, so that they [the heathen] are withOut eXCuSe.
§ 3. EVIDENCE of HIS ExISTENCE FROM HIS WORKS OF PROVIDENCE.
Ex. 5: 1. And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, 'Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should
let Israe! go. 7: 17. Thus saith the Lord, in this thou shalt know that I am the LoRD: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood. 8: 16, And the Lo RD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt. And they did so. Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them ; as the Lord had said. 22. And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou may est know that I am the LoRD in the midst of the earth. And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to-morrow shall this sign be. And the LoRD did so ; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies. 14: 3. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ''They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them ; and I will be honored upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LoRD. And they did so. 29. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians ; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea-shore. And Israel saw that great work which the LoRD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses. 18: 10. And Jethro said, Blessed be the LoRD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the LoRD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
T 20: 18. And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 20: 22. And the LoRD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 29:46. And they shall know that I am the Lo RD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the Lo RD their God. DEUT. 4: 32. For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LoRD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that the Lo RD he is God ; there is none else beside him. Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he showed thee his great fire ; and thou heardest his
words out of the midst of the fire. —39. Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. 2 CH Ro N. 33: 10. And the Lord spake to Manasseh, and to his peole: but they would not hearken. herefore the LoRD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. And when he was in affliction, he besought the LoRD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, and prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God. Ps. 9; 16. The Lord is known by the judgments which he executeth.
God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. 6: 2. And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LoRD : and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. DEUT. 33: 26. There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. The eternal God is thy refuge. And underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. 32:40. For I list up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. Ps. 102: 24. Thy years are throughout all generations. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth ; and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. 135: 13. Thy name, O Lorp, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations. 145: 13. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generation S.
T Is A. 44:6. Thus saith the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LoRD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last ; and beside me there is no God. And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people : , And the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show unto them. 48: 12. Hearken unto me, 0 Jacob and Israel, my Called ; I am he ; I am the first, I also am the last. Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the eath, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. 63: 16. Thy name is from everlasting. Ps. 90: 2. From everlasting to everlasting thou art God. — 4. A thousand years in thy sight, are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 102: 12. Thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever, and thy remembrance unto all generations. Thy years are throughout all generations. Thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
MAL. 8: 6. I am the Lord, I change not.

§ 2. HIs or IGINATING Power.
GEN. 1: 1. In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the Heaven, to divide the day from the night ; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: and let them be for lights in the firmament of the Heaven, to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of Heaven. 21. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly after their kind; and every winged fowl after his kind ; and God saw that it was good. 2: 7. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Ps. 33: 6. By the word of the Lo R D were the heavens made ; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in store-houses. For he spake, and it was done ; he commanded, and it stood fast. Ps. 100: 3. Know ye that the LoRD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves ; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Ps. 104: 1. Bless the LoRD, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great ; thou art clothed with honor and majesty. Who
T Is A. 45: 11. Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it ; I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. JER. 27: 4. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israe! ; Thus shall ye say unto your masters; I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. Is A. 45: 7. I form light and I create darkness. I make peace, and I create evil. I the Lo RD do all these things. AcTs 17:22. Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars-hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, “To THE UNKNowN God.” Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is
Lord of heaven and earth, dwell
find him, though he be not far from every one of us; for in him we live, and move, and have our being ; as certain also of your own poets have said, - “For we are also his offspring.”
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
§ 3. Not MATTER. John 4: 24. God is a spirit. 2 Co R. 3: 17. Now the Lord
is that spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
§ 4. om NIPRESENCE.
Ps. 189: 7. Whither shall I go from thy spirit 2 or, whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the utternost parts of the sea ; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
JER. 23: 23. Am I a God at hand, saith the Lo R p, and not a God afar off Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him saith the Lo R.D. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, “I have dreamed, I have dreamed.”
1 K. 8: 27. Behold the heavens, and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee.
PR. 15: 3. The eyes of the Lord are in every place beholding the evil and the good.
1 CHR on. 28: 9. The Lord searcheth all hearts; and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts.
