4 Then let the children of the saints
Devoted be to God:

Pour out thy Spirit on them, Lord,
And wash them in thy blood!

5 Thus, to the parents and their seed
Shall thy salvation come;

And num'rous households meet at last,
In one eternal home.

C. M.

OW lost and helpless is our state!
Our sin, how deep its stain!

While Satan binds our captive souls
Fast in his slavish chain!

2 But, hark! a voice of sov'reign grace
Sounds from God's holy word;

Come, ye despairing sinners, come,
And rest upon the Lord!"

3 May we obey the gracious call,
And turn to this relief!

We would believe thy promise, Lord:
Oh! help our unbelief.

4 To the pure fountain of thy blood,
Incarnate God, we fly:

There may we cleanse our guilty souls
From stains of deepest dye.

5 Stretch forth thine arm, almighty King!
Our inbred sins subdue;

Implant thy pow'rful grace within,
And form our souls anew.

HOW

C. M.

OW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration giv'n!

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heav'n.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts,
In this dark vale of tears:

Life, light, and joy, it still imparts,
And calms our rising fears.

3 This lamp, through all the tedious night
Of life, shall cheer our way,
Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

[blocks in formation]

HOW shall the young secure their hearts,
And guard their lives from sin?

Thy word, O Lord, the way imparts,
To keep the conscience clean.

2 When once its truth illumes the mind,
It spreads such light abroad,
The meanest may instruction find,
And raise their thoughts to God.

3 'Tis like the sun, a heav'nly light,
That guides us all the day;
And through the dangers of the night,
A lamp to lead our way.

4 Thy word is everlasting truth:

How pure is ev'ry page!

Oh! may it guard our earliest youth,
And cheer our latest age!

OW sweet, how heav'nly is the sight,

All in each other's peace delight,

And so fulfil his word:

2 When each one shares a mourner's woe,
And acts a brother's part;
When sympathizing sorrows flow,
And joy, from heart to heart:

3 When, free from envy, scorn, and pride,
Our wishes all are led;
Eager a brother's faults to hide,
And quick his praise to spread !

4 Love is the golden chain that binds
The happy souls above;

And he's an heir of heav'n that finds
His bosom fill'd with love.

C. M.

OW sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear!

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.

3 Jesus, my surety, shepherd, friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.

4 Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But, when I see thee as thou art,
I'll praise thee as I ought.

5 Till then I would thy love proclaim
With ev'ry fleeting breath;

And may the mem'ry of thy Name
Refresh my soul in death!

C. M.

SING th' almighty pow'r of God,
That made the mountains rise;
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.

2 I sing the wisdom that ordain'd
The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at his command,
And all the stars obey.

3 I sing the goodness of the Lord,
That fill'd the earth with food;
He form'd the creatures with his word,
And then pronounc'd them good.

4 There's not a plant or flow'r below,
But makes his glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
By order from his throne.

5 His hand is my perpetual guard,
He keeps me with his eye;

Why should I then forget the Lord,
Who is for ever nigh?

135 Hymn.

As 113th Ps.

1 I'LL praise my Maker, while I've breath;

And, when my voice is lost in death,
Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs:
My days of praise shall ne'er be past,
While life, and thought, and being last,
Or immortality endures.

2 Happy the man, whose hopes rely
On Israel's God: he made the sky,

[ocr errors]

And earth, and seas, with all their train :
His truth for ever stands secure;

He saves th' oppress'd, he feeds the poor;
And none shall find his promise vain.

3 The Lord gives eyesight to the blind;
The Lord supports the fainting mind;
He sends the lab'ring conscience peace;
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow, and the fatherless;

And grants the pris'ner sweet release.

4 I'll praise my Maker, while I've breath;
And, when my voice is lost in death,
Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs:
My days of praise shall ne'er be past,
While life, and thought, and being last,
Or immortality endures.

'N God's own house pronounce his praise;
His grace he there reveals:

To heav'n your joy and wonder raise,
For there his glory dwells.
