JENEATH thy all-directing rod
Both worlds and worms are equal, God.
Thy hand the comet's orbit drew,

And lighted yonder glowworm too.

Thou didst the dome of heaven build up,

And form yon snowdrop's silver cup.

Deus est quodcumqve vides.

The Captive Israelites.

E sat and wept by Babel's stream,
For Sion was our mournful theme:

And there, on many a willow bough,
We hung our harps, all silent now.

They came, whose captive yoke we bear,
They came, and saw us weeping there:
A mirthful strain they bade us raise:
Come, sing us one of Sion's lays."

How shall I sing to heathen ear

song the Lord was wont to hear? If I forget thee, Sion hill,

May my right hand forget its skill;

My tongue may cleaving palsy chain,
When from my heart thy memories wane;
When thou, Jerusalem, shalt be

Than dearest joys less dear to me.

The Fathers.

HE fathers are in dust, yet live to God:"

So says the Truth; as if the motionless clay Still held the seeds of life beneath the sod, Smouldering and struggling till the judgment-day.

And hence we learn with reverence to esteem
Of these frail houses, though the grave confines :
Sophist may urge his cunning tests, and deem

That they are earth;-but they are heavenly shrines.
