An O DE

AIN would I fing the Pow'r fupreme,
And make th' Omnipotent my Theme;

The firft! the laft! be He the Choice,

Be He my Song that gave me Voice!

Rife, O my Soul, with Vigor rise,
And wing thy noblest Faculties:

Thy God with all thy Reason trace,

And stretch thy Thought o'er Time and Space.

Begin the Song; and first disclose,

How with Eternity He rofe!

Whence, What, and How He is, define;
And speak the Entity Divine.

To view Him at his Source, my Soul,
Turn back, and thither turn thee whole:
The long unmeafur'd Course effay,
And launch into the tracklefs Way.

Thro' Ages and thro' Ages glide;
O'er Myriads and o'er Myriads ftride:
Thro' Time's ideal Progress run,

And grafp the Point where He begun.

Back ftill, ftill back: but oh! forbear;

Thou ftrain'ft in vain to reach Him there:
That Point for ever flies the Thought,

For ever equally remote.
