IV. Others not elected, although they may be called by the miniftry of the word p, and may have fome common operation of the Spirit q; yet they never truly come to Christ, and therefore cannot be faved r: much lefs can men, not profeffing the Chriftian religion, be faved in any other way whatfoever, be they never fo diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do profefs; and to affert and maintain, that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detefted t.

IV. Mat. xxii. 14. For many are called, but few are chofen.

CHAP. XI. Of Justification.

HOSE whom God effectually calleth, he alfo freely.

Tjuftifietha: not by infufing righ counters into them,

by pardoning their fins, and by counting and accepting their perfons as righteous: not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's fake alone: not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience, to them as their righteoufnefs; but by imputing the obedience and fatisfaction of Chrift unto them b, they receiving

and refting on him and his righteoufnefs by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God c.

Il. Faith, thus receiving and refting on Chrift and his righreoufnefs, is the alone inftrument of juftification d; yet is it not alone in the person juftified, but is ever accompanied with all other faving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love e.

we fhould be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Eph. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his grace. Jer. xxiii. 6. In his days Judah fhall be faved, and Ifrael fhall dwell fafely; and this is his name whereby he fhall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUS NESS I Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteoufnefs, fanctification and redemption. v. 31. That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Rom. v. 17. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they who receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnefs, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Chrift. v. 18. Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to con. demnation: even fo by the righte. oufness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. v. 19. For as by one man's difobedience, many were made fin. ners: fo by the obedience of one, fhall many be made righteous.

that we might be juftified by the faith of Chrift, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law thall no flesh be juftified. Phil. iii. y. And be found in him, not having mine own righteoufnefs, which is the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteoufnefs which is of God by faith. Acts xiii. 38. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of fins: v. 39. nd by him all that believe are juftified from all things, from which ye could not be juftified from by the law of Mofes. Eph. ii. 7.That in the ages to come he might fhew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindnefs towards us, through Chrift Jefus. v. . For by grace are E. ye faved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

II. d John i, 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he pow er to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. iii. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is jufbfied by faith, without the deeds of the law. Rom. v. 1. Therefore being juftifi ed by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jefus Chrift.

Chrift, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge. the debt of all thofe that are juftified, and did make a pros per, real and full fatisfaction to his Father's juftice in their behalf f. Yet, in as much as he was given by the Father for them g, and his obedience and fatisfaction accepted in their stead,

works was faith made perfect? v. 26. For as the body without the fpirit is dead, fo faith without works is dead alfo, Gal. v. 6, For in Jefus Chrift, neither circumcifion availeth any thing, nor uncircumcifion; but faith which worketh by love.

III. Rom. v. 8. But God.commendeth his love towards in that while we were yet finters, Chrift died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we fhall be faved from wrath through him. v. 10. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son': much more being reconciled, we fhall be faved by his life, v. 19. For as by one man's difobedience, many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one fhall many be made righteons. I Tim, ii. 5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Chrift Jefus; v. 6. Who gave himself a ranfom for all, to be teftified in due time. Heb. x. 10. By the which will we are fanc tified, through the offering of the body of Jefus Chrift once for all. v. 14. For by one offering he hath perfeated for ever them that are fanctified. Dan. ix, 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgrefhon, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlafting righteousness, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. v. 26. And after threefcore and two weeks, fhall

Yet it pleafed the Lord to bruife him, he hath put him to grief: when thou fhalt make his foul an offering for fin, he fhall fee his feed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord fhall profper in his hand. V. 11. He fhall fee of the travail of his foul, and fhall be fatisfied: by his knowledge fhall my righteous fervant juftify many: for he fhall bear their iniquities. v. 12. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he fhall divide the fpoil with the ftrong: becaufe he hath poured out his foul unto death: and he was numbered with the tranfgreffors, and he bare the fins of many, and made interceflion for the tranfgreffors.

ftead b, and both freely, not for any thing in them; their juftification is only of free grace i: that both the exact juftice and rich grace of God might be glorified in the juftification of finners k.

IV. God did, from all eternity, decree to juflify all the elect 1: and Chrift did, in the fulness of time, die for their fins, and rife again for their juftification m: nevertheless they are not justified, until the holy Spirit doth in due time actually apply Chrift unto them n.

fication of the fpirit, unto obedience, and fprinkling of the blood of Jefus Christ. v. 19. But with the preci ous blood of Chrift, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. v. 20, Who verily was fore-ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. Rom. viii, 30. More. over, whom he did predeftinate, them he alfo called: and whom he called, them he alfo juflified: and whom he jullified, them he alfo glorified.
