(1) From Adam, to Mofes, the World was almoft folely governed by the natural Law; which feems to be the Meaning of that hard Text Rom. 5. 13. For until the Law fin was in the World, that is, before the Law of Moses was given, Men were capable of offending againft fome other Law, for otherwife Sin could not have been imputed to them, for Sin is not impu ted where there is no Law. And then it follows, Nevertheless, &c. that is, during that Space from Adam to Mefer, Men finned against the natural Law, and were liable to Death upon that Account, though they had not offended against an exprefs Revelation from God, as Adam had done; for that the Apostle feems to mean, by finning after the fimilitude of Adam's Tranfgreffion. that was to come: 15. But not as the offence, fo alfo is the free gift. For if through the offence of one, many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jefus Chrift, hath abounded un-. to many. 16. And not as it was by one that finned fo is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation; but the free gift is of many offences unto juftification. 17. For if by one mans offence, [Or, by one offence] death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnefs, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Chrift. 18. Therefore, as by the offence of one [Or, by one offence] judgment came upon all men to condemnation : even fo by the righteoufnels of one [Or, by one righteoufnefs], the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. 19. For as by one mans difobedience many were made fimers fo by the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous. 20. Moreover, the law entred, that the offence might abound: But where fin abounded, grace did much, more abound: 21. That as fin hath reigned unto death, even fo might grace reign through righteoufnefs unto eternal life, by Jefus Chrift our Lord.

(1) The Defign of the Apoftle here, is not to fhew that we may fafely continue in Sin; but it is, on the contrary, to fhew that we are obliged to become the Servants of God, and to have our Fruit unto Holiness, as is manifeft from this, and the following Verfes. Thofe therefore who fancy that the Gofpel gives Men a liberty to fin, are under a very great and dangerous Miftake. For the great Design thereof is to call Men to repent of, and fortake their Sins. It commands us to deny all Ungodliness and worldly Lufts, and to practife whatever is Praife-worthy, and of good Report; all thofe Duties which are comprehended under thofe extenfive Words, living foberly, righteously, and godly. We are not indeed under the Curfe of the Law, nor bound to obferve those burdenfome Rites and Ceremonies, which the Jews were; but we are admitted into the gracious and merciful Covenant made with Man in Christ Jesus, by Vertue whereof a fincere and univerfal Obedience will be accepted, inftead of one that is abfolute and perfect.
