too late to stop the rise. For want of regularly established openings abroad, French farmers having need of money take their grain to be sold as soon as it is thrashed. During the months of autumn and winter there is a superabundance in all market places, and the prices are low; then, in the spring time it is perceived that supplies in the farms are exhausted, prices rise rapidly, duties become lower in proportion, search is made for foreign cereals; they must be had at any price. But the supplying countries have sold their produce to regular consumers (to the English, for example), and it is only by paying much more that our countrymen can withdraw corn from those localities.-Chesnée.

We walked on together for nearly an hour without stopping. At last we saw a light which moved backward and forward, and we soon heard the distant barking of dogs. My companion, who was acquainted with the locality, thought we were near the old bridge which had suffered much by the late flood, but which had been sufficiently repaired to allow foot passengers to pass over it. We hoped thus to be able to reach the opposite shore and to arrive at the castle before the news of the defeat had reached the King. When we came nearer to the light, we saw distinctly a body of cavalry bivouacing round a fire. The dogs had given the alarm, and before we had time to speak to each other, we found ourselves surrounded by four men on horseback.
