PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THIS Book has now been out of print for several years. Applications having been made for copies from time to time, the Editor persuades himself that a new Edition will be acceptable to the public. He sends it forth again precisely as it was; for, although the interest of the discussions somewhat falls off towards the close of the volume, and all through some of the remarks are of inferior value, he has felt that to make a selection would be both difficult and hazardous. The volume, therefore, remains as it was, a faithful and complete representation of the Notes which the late Mr Pratt recorded in ten manuscript volumes, prepared by hin evidently with great care, from his own memoranda, soon after each meeting was held, when the discussion was fresh upon his memory—a task for which his character, as a man of great accuracy, as well as of sound sense and piety, eminently fitted him.

The Editor may add, that when the volume first appeared he received many testimonies to its value. He states this the rather, because others expressed a doubt as to the propriety of his having made public, discussions which had taken place in all the freedom of brotherly social intercourse. The Editor had well weighed this before determining to publish the volume;

and his own opinion was confirmed by that of others on whose judgment he could rely. Of the testimonies he received, there is one he cannot refrain from quoting :

"ADDINGTON, October 2, 1856.

"MY DEAR ARCHDEACON PRATT,—I am glad to have the opportunity, before you leave England, of congratulating you on having been able to bequeath to us so valuable a legacy as your Eclectic Notes. To use an expression of recent date, they are truly suggestive; and suggestive of ideas and sentiments which cannot be too widely disseminated, or be too generally adopted by the clergy of every age.

"It is an additional obligation on the part of the Church to your excellent Father, who 'yet speaketh' in this interesting volume.

...

"J. B. CANTUAR."

This testimony is the more valuable from its being entirely spontaneous, as no means had been taken to bring the volume to his Grace's notice.

CALCUTTA, May 6, 1865.
