'Tis thine each wandering soul to seek, (If driven, or left, or parted) To heal the weak, to tend the sick; To bind the broken hearted, May we, kind Shepherd, to thee cleave: Follow thy call, and to thee live.

Nor wilt thou, Lord, thy flock forsake, Ev'n when thro' death's vale passing; But with thy rod the count shall take,— Each one in love embracing! Lord, we would live to thee, and die Within thy care, beneath thine eye.

GRACE! 'tis a charming sound,

Harmonious to the ear;

Heaven with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.

God's grace contrived the way
To save rebellious man,

By Jesus' death, and rise, and sway;
Great grace-through-justice plan!

And

Grace led our wandering feet
To tread the heavenly road;

grace to prayer grants succours meet,
While pressing on to God,

God's grace his work shall crown,
Through everlasting days;

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves our praise.

AS a little child relies

On a care beyond its own;
Knows 'tis neither strong nor wise,
Fears to stir a step alone.

So, I cast my care on thee,
God and Father, guard and guide;
Ever my protector be;
Ever for my wants provide,
What thou shalt to-day provide,
I will as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
I will to thy wisdom leave.

Thus relieved from cares and fears,
Loving, for thy love to me;

I would pass this vale of tears,
Pleased with all that pleaseth thee.

LIFE AND DEATH.

S. M.

THIS world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh;

'Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

Beyond this vale of tears
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years,
And all that life is love,

There is a death whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath;

Oh! what eternal horrors hang
Around that doom of death!

Lord God of truth and grace!
Teach us that death to shun;

Teach us to walk in life's blest ways;—
To stand before thy Son.

[blocks in formation]

I WOULD not live always: I ask not to

stay

Where storm after storm rises dark o'er my way:

The few cloudy mornings that dawn on us here,

Are enough for life's woes, not enough for its cheer.

I would not live always no !-welcome the tomb !

Since Jesus has died, and has entered its gloom;

There in peace be my rest, till he bid me

arise,

To admire him in triumph ascending the skies.

Who? who would live always ?-away from our God,

Away from his peaceful and blissful abode ; Where the rivers of pleasure run through the bright plains,

And the noontide of glory eternally reigns;

Where saints of all ages in harmony meet, Their Saviour and brethren transported to greet;

While the anthems of rapture unceasingly roll,

And the smile of the Lord is the feast of the soul.

VITAL spark of heavenly flame,

Quit, oh! quit this mortal frame;
Trembling, hoping, lingering, flying,
Oh! the pain, the bliss of dying!
Cease, fond nature, cease thy strife!
And let me languish into life.
Hark! they whisper, angels say,
"Sister spirit, come away:"
What is this-absorbs me quite,
Steals my senses, shuts my sight,
Drowns my spirit, draws my breath,
Tell me, my soul, can this be death?
The world recedes-it 'disappears—
Heaven opens on my eyes! my ears
With sounds seraphic ring!

Lend, lend your wings! I mount! I fly! "O grave! where is thy victory!

O death! where is thy sting!"

7's & 6's.

IME is winging us away
To our eternal home;

Life is but a winter day,

A journey to the tomb:

Youth and vigour soon will flee,
Blooming beauty lose its charms;
All that's mortal soon shall be

Enclosed in death's cold arms.

Time is winging us away

To our eternal home;

Life is but a winter day,

A journey to the tomb.

But the Christian shall attain
Health and beauty soon, above;
Far beyond this world of sin,

Secure in Jesus' love.

8's, 7's, & 4's.

PRESENT world I see thee flying
Fast as vapours in the wind;
All thy fond enjoyments dying,
Leaving not a wreck behind!
Sad delusion;

Where such shadows fill the mind.

World to come! my life, my treasure;
All are hid with Christ in thee;
All thy promised perfect pleasure,
Mine eternally shall be:
Thus foretasting

Would I follow Christ to thee.

NAME OF JESUS PRECIOUS.

JESUS! I love thy charming name,

'Tis music to my ear;
