"Father! remove-remove this cup,
"If such thy sacred will;-
"If not, resigned! I drink it up!—
"Thy purpose to fulfil.”

Here, love more strong than death, I see
Displayed in deepest woe;
Messiah bearing sin for me!

My sorrows carrying too!

'Tis here I learn his cross to bear,
His holy will t' obey;

Here, learn, when trials sore draw near,
To watch, bow down, and pray.

E dies! the Friend of sinners dies!
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around:
A solemn darkness veils the skies;
A sudden trembling shakes the ground.
In love and grief beyond degree,
The Lord of glory dies for men:
But on th' appointed morning, see!
Jesus, the dead, revives again.

He ever lives! he reigns our King!
Born to redeem and strong to save.

Oh! death (dread monster,) where's thy sting?
And where's thy victory boasting grave?

[blocks in formation]

TELL might the earth, astonished,

WELL quake;

And nature sympathise ;

The sun, ashamed, as night go black;
Their Lord, Emmanuel, dies!

For us,

did pangs his soul assail;
For us, this death was borne:
Our sins gave sharpness to the nail,
And urged the spear and thorn!
While golden harps and angel-tongues,
Resound immortal lays;

Jesus! permit our humble songs
To raise and mean thy praise.

HEN I survey the wond'rous cross,
On which the Prince of glory died;

All other gain I count but loss,

And for him give up all beside.

See! from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet?
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Since I, who was undone and lost,
Have pardon through His name and word;
Father, forbid that I should boast,
Save in the cross of Christ my Lord.

THE

HE trembling earth, the darkened sky,
Proclaim the fact abroad;

And with th' amazed centurion cry

"This was the Son of God!"

This great atoning sacrifice,

May well our hopes revive;

Since God's own Son thus bleeds and dies,
The sinner sure may live!

With him we soon shall walk in white,
And, with his saints, shall prove

The breadth,and length,and depth,and height
Of our Redeemer's love.

ESUS the "Mighty God" came down ;

JJehovah," whom all heavens adore,

Left all the glories of his throne,
Took flesh and blood, became most poor;
And, in the flesh he suffered all
That justice could demand of me;
My heavy woes on Him did fall;
He bare my sins upon the tree !
He died; but soon he rose again,—
He rose, my soul to justify;
And now does ever live and reign,
In glories bright, above the sky.
He our fore-runner, will prepare
A place for all that do him love:
Soon we shall meet him in the air,
To live and reign with him above.

FOR

C. M.

NOR me! Oh! did my Saviour bleed
And did my Sovereign die ?

Would he devote that sacred head!
For such a worm as I ?

Was it for crimes that I had done

He groaned upon the tree?

Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree.

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in;

The Lord made flesh, was crucified
For man the creature's sin!

But sympathy can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Lord, may I give myself to thee,
That I thy will may do!

heaven Saviour

To bless mankind on earth;
He suffered grief, contempt, and shame,
To give our comforts birth,

He bled, and groaned, and died,
Our awful debt to pay,
The Lamb of God was crucified,
To put our sins away.

In rising from the dead,
He triumphed o'er our foes;
Captivity he captive led,

Then unto heaven he rose.
There ever lives our Lord,

To plead for us with God;
Lord, we believe thy faithful word,
And triumph in thy blood.

HERE hangs the Saviour of mankind!
His visage marred, his head reclined;

TH

His looks, his words, his hands, his feet,
All show his love divinely great.

The thieves, expiring on each side,
Declared the crimes, for which they died;
But what, O! Saviour! hadst thou done?
Thou died'st for crimes!-but not thine own!
He died for sinners,-died for me!
'Tis LOVE's unfathomed mystery!

Since, then, I'm bought, and saved by grace,
My Lord I'll follow, love, and praise.

[blocks in formation]

EHOLD the Saviour of mankind,
Nailed to the shameful tree!

How vast the love that him inclined,
To bleed and die for me!

""Tis finished!"-the full ransom paid:
"Receive my soul !"—he cries.

Lo! Jesus bows his sacred head!
He bows his head, and dies!

But soon he breaks death's envious chain;
Doth in full glory shine:

O! Lamb of God, was ever pain,
Was ever love like thine!

[blocks in formation]

WHEN, on Sinai's top, I see

God descend in majesty,

To proclaim his holy law,
All my spirit sinks with awe.
