WHAT wisdom, majesty, and grace, Through all the gospel shine!
'Tis God that speaks, and we confess The doctrine most divine.
Down from the throne of God on high, The almighty Saviour comes; Lays his bright robes of glory by, And feeble flesh assumes.
The mighty debt that sinners owed, Upon the cross he pays;
He rises! He ascends to God,
To reign our Prince of peace.
Great God! with reverence we adore Thy justice and thy grace; And on thy faithfulness and power Our firm dependance place.
ON Pentecost the joy was great,
As Jesus' followers waiting sat, When down the Holy Spirit came, And shone on each like tongues of flame.
What gifts, what miracles, He gave ! The weak made wise, the timid brave; Furnished their tongues with wondrous words More potent far than shields and swords.
Thence, to the nations of the earth, They set the great Redeemer forth; And Jews, and Greeks, and learn'd, and rude Were by the gospel word subdued. We too, (proud rebels !) are brought low, And to the mighty Saviour bow; Believe his word, and own his sway, And, won by love, in love obey.
SALVATION! O the joyful sound! 'Tis pleasant to our ears;
A sovereign balm for every wound, A cordial for our fears.
Buried in sorrow and in sin,
At death's dark door we lay; But saved, we rise, by grace divine, To see a heavenly day. Salvation! let the echo fly
The spacious earth around; While saints on earth, and angels high, Unite to raise the sound.
O happy period! glorious day! When earth and heaven shall raise, With all their powers, th' enraptured lay To sound the Saviour's praise.
THE Father vindicates the cause
Of Jesus, bleeding on the cross; He dies, the heav'ns put mourning on, He rises, owned God's powerful Son.
Behold the Lord ascend on high! No more to bleed, no more to die : Behold the Comforter sent down! To seal the mission of the Son.
Throughhim the blind their sight receive, The dead arise, the dying live,
The dumb speak wonders, and the lame Leap like the hart, and bless the Lamb. Hence, and for ever, from my heart I bid each doubt and fear depart; And unto Him my soul resign, Who bears credentials so divine.
THE gospel is the power of God: Indenture of salvation given;
In cov'nants rich, and sealed with blood, Confirmed on earth, enrolled in heaven. Therein Jehovah is revealed,
Just justifier of his saints;
And Jesus there, with face unveiled, Speaks to the heart in pardon-grants. Now "all men every where are called" To this love-deed their seals to set; And by obedient faith, take hold, And heirs become of heaven's estate. We, on perusing this blest deed, Did, love-compelled, our souls resign; To Jesus turned, believed, obeyed, So adding, Lord, our seals to thine.
JESUS, thy blessings are not few, Nor is thy gospel weak;
Thy grace can melt the stubborn Jew, And turn the scorning Greek. Wide as the reach of Satan's rage Does thy salvation flow; "Tis not confined to sex nor age, The lofty nor the low.
While grace is offered to the prince, The poor may take his share; No mortal has a just pretence To perish in despair.
Thy doctrine is redeeming love; There's virtue in thy name To turn the raven to a dove,- The lion to a lamb.
HOW beauteous are the feet
Of those on Zion's hill!
Who bring salvation on their tongues, And words of peace reveal.
How gladdening to our ears The joyful tidings are ! "Zion, behold thy Saviour King! He reigns and triumphs here."
How happy are our eyes That see this heavenly light! Prophets and Kings desired it long, But died without the sight.
Lo! God makes bare his arm! And sends his gospel word; Let all the nations now behold Salvation in the Lord.
HOW free and bounteous is thy grace, Redeeming Son of God!
In pardon to the Jew and Greek, And men of every blood.
The mightiest king, the meanest slave, May Jesus' mercy taste;
He bids the beggar and the prince Come to the gospel feast.
None are cast out who to him come (The lost themselves exclude.) Welcome the learned and polite, The ignorant and rude.
He welcomes all of every name, Of every tribe and tongue;
O! that the world would hear and live, And to our Lord belong.
LO! the Almighty God, most high, Ambassadors to rebels sends;
His messengers his place supply, And Jesus begs us to be friends.
Us, in the stead of Christ, they pray,- Us, in the stead of God, entreat, To cast our arms (our doubts) away, And find forgiveness at his feet.
