It will be obvious on the most cursory perusal of the following Sermon, that it bears less on the subject announced as its title, than on the practical development and application of the text on which it is founded. Of this the only explanation to be given is, that the Sermon, though deemed sufficiently relevant to the general subject of Religious Indifference, by the excellent Minister who instituted these Lectures, was not originally intended by the writer for this work, nor for any work, but was merely a plain exposition of an important Scripture, addressed to his own people. ALTHOUGH there never was a religion which could boast of fewer of the external appliances of human authority and power than the religion of the gospel, yet never was there one which claimed to exercise a more implicit and undivided sway over the hearts, and lives, and consciences of its followers.
