By today’s criteria, not a great novel but nevertheless a bold attempt showing great originality. Miss Landon spends much time discussing contemporary art and literature and psycho-analysing her characters – but that is the point, she is examining the very nature of fiction and artifice. In spite of these defects, the author has obvious intelligence and speaks with a very engaging voice. She supplies a romance and, at the same time, dissects it and pokes fun at it. Cleverly, she introduces a second heroine, who has real difficulties but deals with them in a practical manner. Emily Arundel, the principal protagonist, is left disappointed and reality triumphs.
