ARISE, shine; for thy light is

come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee; thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. Then shalt thou see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. The multitude of camels shall cover thee; . . . . all they from Sheba shall come, and shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord. All the flocks of Kedar shall gather themselves together unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on Mine altar, and I will glorify the house of My glory.

angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David and He shall reign over the house of

And when the servant of Elisha, the man of God, was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray Thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord, and said, Smite this people, I pray Thee, with blindness. And He smote them with blindness according to

6 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Then shall the righteous man stand in great boldness before the face of such as have afflicted him,

When they see it, they shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the strangeness of his salvation, so far beyond all that they looked for. And they, repenting and groaning for anguish of spirit, shall say within themselves, This was he whom we had sometimes in derision, and a proverb of reproach. We fools accounted his life madness, and his end to be without honour. How is he numbered among the children of God, and his lot is among the saints. What hath pride profited us? or what hath riches with our vaunting brought us? All those things are passed away like a shadow..... But the righteous live for evermore: their reward also is with the Lord, and the care of them is with the Most High. Therefore shall they receive a glorious kingdom, and a beautiful crown, from the Lord's hand for with His right hand shall He cover them; and with His arm shall He protect them.

a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us : this is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Then all kneeling, say the Confession and Litany

following:

BLESSED Trinity, One God, Father, Son, and Holy

Ghost, we here assembled, prostrate in spirit before Thee, do confess in the sight of the whole court of heaven our innumerable offences committed against Thy divine majesty. We have sinned, Lord, we have sinned; we have grievously offended Thee, through the whole course of our lives, in thought, word, and deed, and therefore are most unworthy to lift up our eyes to heaven, or so much as to name Thy sacred name. But, O God, eternal Creator of all things, Father of mercies, and God of all comfort, who hast made us in Thine own image, redeemed us by Thy only Son, adopted us Thy children, and shewest mercy to those who humbly and sincerely seek it, be merciful to us, O Lord, and give us a true contrition for all the sins we have committed against Thee, that, being turned from all our evil ways, we may, by a sincere repentance, obtain Thy peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We sinners do beseech Thee to hear us, and grant that we may be ever thankful for whatever opportunities Thou art pleased to give us of meeting in Thy worship, and that we may lay hold of all such occasions for Thy greater glory and the good of our own souls ;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That we may ever appear before Thee with a fitting sense of our own unworthiness and of Thy awful majesty. we may come before Thee as sinful creatures admitted into the choirs of blessed spirits, with them to join our praises, and permitted to adore before Thy throne;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to give a like spirit to all Christians, that so all irreverences and abuses may be removed from all places of Thy worship;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst mercifully assist us in preparing our hearts to be the temples of the Holy Ghost, that Thou, O God, mayest abide with us for ever;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

Vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to conduct us by Thy wisdom,

N

to restrain us by Thy justice, to comfort us by Thy mercy, and to defend us by Thy power.

That we may learn to submit our reason to the obedience of faith, and so much the more exalt the wonders of Thy goodness, as they exceed the capacity of our understanding; We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.
