Family Prayers.

APPENDIX.

APPENDIX.

COLLECTS AND PRAYERS FOR PARTICULAR DAYS AND SEASONS, AND WHICH MAY BE SAID IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE LORD'S PRAYER.

For seven days after Christmas.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us Thy only begotten Son to take

our nature upon Him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin; grant that we being regenerate, and made Thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by Thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

For Wednesday in Easter-week, and four days after.

LMIGHTY Father, who hast given Thine only Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification; grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may alway serve Thee in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of the same Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For seven days after Ascension-day.

GRANT, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that we who believe that

Thy only-begotten Son, our Redeemer, ascended into heaven, may ourselves also in mind dwell on heavenly things; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Wednesday in Whitsun-week, and four days after.

GOD, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that we may, by the gift of the same Spirit, be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Vigil of a Saint.

RANT, O Lord, that while we anticipate with joy the festivals of Thy blessed saints, we may never forget the strait gate and narrow way by which they entered into Thy kingdom; and so strengthen us with Thy grace, that we, following their good examples, may be also worthy when Thou shalt call us to enter into their joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Festival of any Saint.

GOD, who dost inspire us with joy by the annual solemnity of blessed ; mercifully grant that we may imitate the actions of him (or her) whose festival we celebrate; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Rogation Days.

GOD, our Creator and preserver, who dost give us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, and at this time fillest all things living with plenteousness; forgive us, we beseech Thee, our ingratitude for these Thy so great and inestimable benefits; and as Thou dost mercifully spare when we deserve punishment, and in wrath thinkest upon mercy, O be favourable, be favourable unto Thy people. From lightning and tempest, from plague, pestilence, and famine, from battle and murder, and from sudden death, O Lord, deliver us. Graciously preserve to our use the kindly fruits of the earth, with all other bounties of Thy providence; and grant that we may use the same to Thy glory, for the relief of those in need as well as for our own support; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Unity.

GOD, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of Peace; give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord that as there is but one body, and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may henceforth be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this:

HOLY Jesus, King of the saints and Prince of the holy Catholic
Thy spouse, which Thou hast

Thy right hand, and redeemed and cleansed with Thy blood, even the whole Catholic Church from one end of the earth even to the other. O preserve her safe from schism, heresy, and sacrilege. Unite all her members with the bands of faith, hope, and charity, and an external communion, when it shall seem good in Thine eyes. Let her daily sacrifice of prayer and praise, and of sacramental thanksgiving, never cease; but be for ever presented unto Thee, and for ever united to the intercession of her dearest Lord, and for ever prevail for the obtaining for every one of her members grace and blessing, pardon and salvation. Amen.

Or this:

RACIOUS Father, we humbly beseech Thee for Thy holy Catholic

GChurch, and especially for that branch of it to which we belong,

Where

that Thou wouldst be pleased to fill it with all truth and peace. it is corrupt, purge it; where it is in error, direct it; where it is superstitious, rectify it; when any thing is amiss, reform it; when it is right, strengthen and confirm it; when it is in want, furnish it; when it is

divided and rent asunder, make up the breaches of it: O Thou Holy One of Israel. Amen.

Thanksgiving for a Child baptised.

ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all goodness, and the well-spring of divine graces, who hast been pleased this day to regenerate this infant, by water and the Holy Ghost in holy baptism, thereby receiving him into the number of Thy children, and making him an heir of everlasting life in the communion of Thy glorious saints; we praise and magnify Thy name for this Thy great goodness to him and all Thy children. O Lord, strengthen him, we beseech Thee, with that blessed Spirit of Thine, the Ghostly Comforter; and daily increase in him Thy manifold gifts of grace,—the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and ghostly strength, the spirit of knowledge and true godliness, and fill him, O Lord, with the spirit of Thy holy fear; even through Him who hath sent down the Spirit upon His Church, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for a Sick Person.

ALMIGHTY and merciful Father, to whom alone belong the issues of life and death, look down from heaven, we humbly beseech Thee, upon our dear brother, now lying on the bed of sickness. Restore him to health, if it be Thy will; deliver him in Thy good appointed time from his bodily pain; and save his soul, for Thy mercies' sake. Grant, O Lord, this our prayer; for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Prayers which may be said on a Friend's Death or Burial.

GRANT, O God, that while we here lament the departure of our dear

brother, we may always remember that we are most certainly to follow him. Give us grace to prepare for that last hour by a good life, that we may not be surprised by a sudden and unprovided death, but be ever watching, that when Thou shalt call we may with the Bridegroom enter into eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mo

OST wise and merciful God, who hast ordained this life as a passage to the future, confining our repentance to the time of our pilgrimage here, and reserving for hereafter the state of punishment and reward; by Thy grace enable us who are yet alive, and still have opportunity of reconciliation with Thee, so to watch over all our actions, and correct every the least deviation from the true way to heaven, that we be neither surprised with our sins uncancelled, nor with our duties imperfect; but when our bodies go down into the grave our souls may ascend to Thee, and dwell for ever in the mansions of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour. Amen.
